This is the first work in English to provide a comprehensive history of the Orthodox Church of Georgia. Written by prominent church historians, the study's in-depth introduction to the early history of the church reveals it to be remarkably intertwined with the history of the people and land of Georgia. This is the backdrop for the annexation of the united Kingdom of Georgia by Tsarist Russia during the first decade of the 19th century. The year 1811 is significant since it marks Russia's official removal of the Georgian Church's autocephaly, or independence under its own patriarch. Placed under the authority of the Russian Church, this was part of a move to russify the Georgians and to absorb their country into the Russian Empire. Despite continuous resistance, the Russian Revolution and subsequent creation of the USSR meant merely that the Soviets continued the policy into the 20th century. It has been only in recent years with the dismantling of the Soviet Union and declaration of the independent Republic of Georgia that the church has regained the right to exist, rising now to the challenge not only of rebuilding its clergy but also reconstructing its destroyed monuments and reclaiming its looted holy relics and treasures. Unique research into this hitherto unknown struggle throws up a mirror to political and cultural life in Georgia as well as providing insights into the persecution of religion by both imperialist and communist Russia.
