Nikolay Gerasimovich Kuznetsov (24 July 1904 – 6 December 1974) was a Soviet naval officer who achieved the rank of Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union and served as People's Commissar of the Navy during the Second World War. The N. G. Kuznetsov Naval Academy and the Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov are named in his honor. Kuznetsov played a crucial role during the first hours of the war – at this pivotal moment, his resolve and blatant disregard for orders averted the destruction of the Soviet Navy. By June 21, 1941, Kuznetzov was convinced of the inevitability of war with Nazi Germany. On the same day Semyon Timoshenko and Georgy Zhukov issued a directive prohibiting Soviet commanders from responding to "German provocations". The Navy, however, constituted a distinct ministry (narkomat) , and thus Kuznetsov held a position which was technically outside the direct chain of command. The pin is in the shape of a flag, flowing from right to left over a globe, There is a red hammer and sickle on the left side of the flag and a red star on the right. Below the flag there is the ship's image displayed against a globe showing blue water. The name is on a black banner below the ship with the words Admiral Yumashev in Russian. There is a ship's wheel between the two words and small anchors on either side of the wheel at the bottom of the pin. The back is gold color with no text, This pin was said to be part of a set given to its last owner by the widow of a Soviet Admiral in Moscow in 1992. Most, if not all, of the pins are believed dated from 1980 or earlier. While we describe this as a pin, some sources would also describe this as a badge. Often these pins were produced in connection with a commissioning ceremony. In a few cases, they may also have been produced to commemorate the end of service of the warship. Admiral Yumashev was a Kresta II-class cruiser of the Soviet Navy. The Kresta II-class cruisers or also known as Project 1134A was developed in 1964-1965. Despite the fact that the project number and its code clearly show a connection with its predecessor (Project 1134 Berkut), in terms of its combat purpose it was already a completely different ship, with significant changes not only in the composition of weapons, but also in design. The tests of the ships of the series took place in a tense atmosphere typical of the Cold War. The test results showed quite satisfactory seaworthiness of the ships of Project 1134A. The ship was built at Sevmash in Severodvinsk and was launched on 30 September 1976 and commissioned on 26 September 1977. She entered service on 30 December 1977 and on 17 February 1978, she was enlisted in the Northern Fleet in the 170th brigade of anti-submarine ships of the 7th operational squadron. In the winter of 1978-1979, the ship represented the interests of the USSR and monitored the movements of a potential enemy in the Mediterranean Sea, together with the Smyshlyonyi participated in escorting the Kiev aircraft carrier. In connection with the attack of the PRC on Vietnam, the ship was for a long time at the entrance to the Suez Canal for a possible transition to the conflict area. When on 5 March, the PRC leadership announced the withdrawal of its troops and the conflict was settled, the ship continued to carry out combat service.  From September to October 1979, she supported the interests of the USSR in the area of NATO OVMS exercises (Ocean Hunt '79). In the same year, she took part in the only operational-tactical exercise in the history of the Soviet Navy with the real use of forces and means - the AUG Encounter Battle, between the TAVKR Kiev and Minsk. From February 22 to February 27, 1982, she made a goodwill call at the port of Bizerte (Tunisia). In 1983, the ship was awarded a commemorative sign of the Murmansk regional executive committee - The best surface ship of the Northern Fleet, and the crew was presented with a commemorative banner of the Murmansk regional committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the regional executive committee and the council of people's deputies. From February 25 to March 20, 1984, she monitored the ships of a potential enemy during the NATO exercises Team Spirit '84. In the period from 3 May to 30 December 1984, the ship was on a long voyage in the region of southwestern Africa (visits to Luanda in Angola, Pointe Noire in Congo, Praia and Mindelo on the Cape Verde Islands, Cotonou in Benin, Sao Tome and Principe). Albert Joseph Maria Defant (July 12, 1884 - December 24, 1974) was an Italian-Austrian meteorologist, oceanographer and climatologist. He published fundamental works on the physics of the atmosphere and ocean and is regarded as one of the founders of physical oceanography. Defant was Professor of Cosmic Physics (corresponding to meteorology and geophysics) at Innsbruck University from 1919 to 1926. During that time he was able to show that large-scale structures in the atmosphere can provide meridional heat transport from tropical to high latitudes. He was rated as an expert on tides, and he was invited to participate in two cruises of the German survey vessel "Panther" in the North Sea in 1925 and 1926. Defant was Professor of Oceanography at the Friedrich- Wilhelms- Universit and Director of the "Institut and Museum freskunde" in Berlin from 1926 to 1945. The German Meteor expedition had been started in 1925. The chief scientist Alfred Merz died in Buenos Aires in 1925, and Albert Defant took over the task from 1926-27. Meteor was a German survey vessel, noted for her survey work in the Atlantic Ocean between 1925 and 1927. Handed over to the Soviet Union following World War II, the ship was renamed Ekvator. Her ultimate fate is not known. Her keel was laid at the Kaiserliche Werft at Danzig in February 1914 and Meteor was launched in January 1915. Originally intended to become a gunboat for the Imperial German Navy's colonial service she was not finished during the First World War due to limited need for lightly armed vessels. After the war the uncompleted hull was tugged to Wilhelmshaven for outfitting work at the Reichsmarinewerft. She was outfitted as a survey vessel and early sonar equipment was fitted. The ship had a steel hull with two propellers each driven by a triple-expansion steam engine. Additionally she had a brigantine rig to boost range. Meteor was commissioned as a military ship with the Reichsmarine but spent most of her life in a scientific role. Meteor entered service in November 1924 and made her maiden survey expedition between 20 January and 17 February 1925 with the main purpose to check the equipment. On 16 April 1925 Meteor started the German Atlantic expedition, also known as German Meteor expedition, and did not return to Germany until 2 June 1927. During this expedition the ship sailed more than 67,500 nautical miles (125,000 km; 77,700 mi) and took cross sections of the South Atlantic between Africa and South America mapping the entire ocean. In the course of this survey work Meteor found a bank (seamount) that rises to 560 metres (1,840 ft) below sea level from a depth of 4,000 metres (13,000 ft).
