Cover has some wear and soiling. Michael Grant CBE (21 November 1914 - 4 October 2004) was an English classicist, numismatist, and author of numerous popular books on ancient history. His 1956 translation of Tacitus's Annals of Imperial Rome remains a standard of the work. Having studied and held a number of academic posts in the United Kingdom and the Middle East, he retired early to devote himself fully to writing. He once described himself as "one of the very few freelancers in the field of ancient history: a rare phenomenon". He published over 70 works. History Today is an illustrated history magazine. Published monthly in London since January 1951, it presents serious and authoritative history to as wide a public as possible. The magazine covers all periods and geographical regions and publishes articles of traditional narrative history alongside new research and historiography. Founded by Brendan Bracken, Minister of Information after the Second World War, chairman of the Financial Times and lieutenant to Sir Winston Churchill, the magazine has been independently owned since 1981. The founding co-editors were Peter Quennell (1951-79) and Alan Hodge (1951-78); subsequent editors were Michael Crowder (1979-81); Michael Trend (1981-82); Juliet Gardiner (1981-85); Gordon Marsden (1985-97) and Peter Furtado (1997-2008). The current editor is Paul Lay. In 1995 it compiled The History Today Companion to British history (London: Collins & Brown, 1995), with 4500 entries covering the entire field in 840 pages edited by Neil Wenborn. History Today generally commissions its articles directly from academic authors and historians, though it does accept unsolicited essays from freelance historians and others if the article is deemed to be serious history, of wide interest or of academic worth. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), or simply the Klan, is the name of three distinct movements in the United States that have advocated extremist reactionary currents such as white supremacy, white nationalism, anti-immigration, and, especially in later iterations, Nordicism, anti-Catholicism, and antisemitism. Historically the KKK used terrorism, both physical assault and murder, against groups or individuals whom they opposed. All three movements have called for the "purification" of American society, and all are considered right-wing extremist organizations. The first Klan flourished in the Southern United States in the late 1860s, then died out by the early 1870s. It sought to overthrow the Republican state governments in the South during the Reconstruction Era, especially by using violence against African American leaders. With numerous chapters across the South, it was suppressed around 1871, through federal law enforcement. Members made their own, often colorful, costumes: robes, masks, and conical hats, designed to be terrifying, and to hide their identities. The second group was founded in 1915, and it flourished nationwide in the early and mid-1920s, particularly in urban areas of the Midwest and West. It was rooted in local Protestant communities and opposed Catholics and Jews, and stressed its opposition to the Catholic Church at a time of high immigration from mostly Catholic nations of southern and eastern Europe. This second organization adopted a standard white costume and used code words which were similar to those used by the first Klan, while adding cross burnings and mass parades to intimidate others. The third and current manifestation of the KKK emerged after 1950, in the form of small, local, unconnected groups that use the KKK name. They have focused on opposition to the Civil Rights Movement, often using violence and murder to suppress activists. The second and third incarnations of the Ku Klux Klan made frequent references to America's "Anglo-Saxon" blood, hearkening back to 19th-century nativism., History Today Limited, 1971, 2.5, Cambridge University Press, 1980.
