Fifty-two glossy full-page colour reproductions of paintings by William Tull. Each painting accompanied by a brief description. "There are those who would vainly try to categorize William Tull as a Southwestern painter - or even as a contemporary classical impressionist. It is true that many of his paintings use the southwest as subject and background; and many do evoke the architecture and spirit of the Pueblo Indian as man in harmony with the earth. On very broad terms he belongs to the school of American Impressionists. But still, you can't categorize Tull, nor his paintings. So critics and laymen alike are left, quite simply, with this: the sheer, unadulterated joy of experiencing the vitality and robustness of life in a Tull painting." - Bill Byron. Illustrated with four color lithographic plates, 8 tinted lithographs with gray and tan backgrounds, and 4 smaller black and white engravings.  Bound in publisher's green cloth, gilt title on upper board; some wear to the corners and edges of the binding, but otherwise a very good, clean copy.  Presentation inscription in pencil to G. S. Carlton from Nathan Wilmart/ August, 1880. Although little is recorded in standard reference and bibliographies of American illustrators, it is apparent from contemporary advertisements and published articles, that Lida Clarkson had a significant career as a book illustrator and teacher.  In addition to this work, which combines both her poetry and her artwork, she was responsible for similar 'gift books' such as Indian Summer  and Violet with Eyes of Blue.  Clarkson was also a teacher of art techniques for young Victorian women interested in drawing and sketching.  In an article for Ingalls Home Magazine (1887), Lida and M. J. Clarkson published instructions on "The Art of Illumination" and "Lessons in Water Color", focusing on both a history of the art forms and practical techniques for painting and drawing. This book was printed by the lithographic firm, A. Hoen & Co., Baltimore, specialists in scientific illustration and map printing.  Perhaps their most important illustrated  publications was the Collection of Chinese Pottery in the Morgan Library, a work considered the "highest class in artistic reproduction ever done in the United States." In Clarkson's work, the quality of the color of the lilies is most extraordinary.  Melding colors to create sophisticated tones, both soft and subtle was their Hoen's signature work.  As Carl Peterson writes Hoen's work, "resulted in a most beautiful result in reproduction, as near to the touch of the brush, as any process known." The illustration listing page 'Note' states that "The above named views, portraits, and inscriptions, are careful representations of the originals. They were drawn by H.B. Mollhausen, artist to the expedition." These 42 numbered illustrations are collated complete and include small maps and tinted view plates, portraits of Native peoples and artifact remains. Civilian author Thomas Ewbank (1792 - 1870) was a commissioner of patents, inventor, and historian of technology; whose "...concern with the arts of the earliest occupants of the New World was an attempt to demonstrate through historical investigation the laws of progress that governed the "miracles of the workshop, uniting the past, present and future." The writings and public career of Ewbank are important for an understanding of how an important segment of mid-nineteenth-century public intellectuals viewed technology and its place in an expanding industrial society..." (William A. Bate in the ANB) The third-named author and friend of Ewbank in this work, Prof. William Wadden Turner (1810 - 1859) a philologist and librarian "...was "pre-eminently distinguished at Washington as the highest authority in all matters appertaining to the knowledge of the languages of the aborigines of America..." He "mastered easily and rapidly the principles of comparative philology which have become in the present period the surest guides in tracing the histories and affinities of different races." When Turner died prematurely in Washington, D.C., Joseph Henry, then secretary of the Smithsonian, mourned "a ripe scholar, a profound philosopher, and an honest man..." (Martin J. Manning, also in the ANB) The report was part of the explorations and surveys for a railroad route across the U.S., which had been conducted during the years 1853 and 1854. Contents include chapter material on the "...localities, numbers, modes of subsistence, &c. of various tribes upon the route"; Indian residences, portraits and dress; traditions, superstitions, pictographs; Indian antiquities and arts; vocabularies of North American languages; condition of the aborigines of New Mexico upon its discovery by Spaniards; history of the Apache nation and other tribes. Approx. 9" x 11 3/4" size, bound in full heavily-textured sober dark brown cloth; small spine title-label gilt, rubbed. Covers with a little edge, tips wear; front and back endpapers scraped, chewed some; boards very good; title page with a few small holes & spotty; contents darkened some; in good condition.. Later marbled wrappers. 11 pages, 1 plate. Rare item with only two copies recorded on OCLC and none in American librarie A reprint "from the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. (Read Mar 6, 1820)," which describes and tries to understand the religious sculptures brought from India by Francis Simpson, who had presented them to the Society 1800. Cadell, with the aid of an attractive engraved plate, places the relie of Cali, Suria and Buddha in the context of Indian mythology and compares the with Greek deities. William Archibald Cadell was a member of a family whose business interests were in coal mining, paper and iron manufacturing. This enables him to travel and contribute to several artistic, antiquarian and scientific societies. A very good presentation copy inscribed in ink at the head of the title "Robert Ferguson Esq. from the Author."
