SYNOPSIS: The success stories presented here challenge the cynical Bay Street axiom that for a businessman to make a small fortune today he has to begin with a large fortune. From the creators of the popular nationally syndicated Global Television series, Everybody's Business, here is a valuable and insightful book chronicling the lives of more than fifty of Canada's most successful entrepreneurs. Kenneth Barnes and Everett Banning provide valuable insights into how entrepreneurs outside the Canadian establishment have realized success in today's highly competitive market. The authors spell out exactly how these entrepreneurs became successful: how a market for a particular product was determined, how a business plan was put in place, how financing was found, and how the product was produced and marketed. Most of these individuals are unknown. Many of them are now wealthy, but others have pursued business dreams to gain independence and personal freedom. Some of the entrepreneurs who had a "better idea" include: Heather and Ken Dafoe, who risked their savings and home to challenge multinationals such as Johnson & Johnson. Their sales in 1985 should top $100,000,000; Chris Duffy, an energetic housewife with five children who got fed up with spilt milk from plastic bags, and developed a new milk jug she is marketing throughout North America; David Steele and Philip Carroll, two enterprising twenty-five-year-olds who own Three Buoys, a houseboat charter company in British Columbia and Ontario. Today they employ 200 people and own over 250 houseboats; Paul Abildgaard, who at age fifty took early retirement from his Calgary company and today is grossing millions bottling Nanton Spring Water. In only five years his empire has spread to cover meat products and soft drinks. Money Makers! reveals why these people succeeded and explores the common thread that runs through virtually all their stories. Kenneth Barnes and Everett Banning have drawn upon real life success stories to uncover a blueprint of action for would-be entrepreneurs and independent businessmen and women. A broadcast journalist for sixteen years, Everett Banning is economics editor and anchorman-commentator for Global Television Network News. Kenneth Barnes is the head of his own consulting firm specializing in marketing communications and is also the executive producer of Everybody's Business.. Hard Cover. Fine/Good. Schneiderman explores the linkages between a new investment rules regime and state constitutions - between a constitution-like regime for the protection of foreign investment and the constitutional projects of national states. The investment rules regime, as in classical accounts of constitutionalism, considers democratically authorized state action as inherently suspect. Despite the myriad purposes served by constitutionalism, the investment rules regime aims solely to enforce limits, both inside and outside of national constitutional systems, beyond which citizen-driven politics will be disabled. Drawing on contemporary and historical case studies, the author argues that any transnational regime should encourage innovation, experimentation, and the capacity to imagine alternative futures for managing the relationship between politics and markets. These objectives have been best accomplished via democratic institutions operating at national, sub-national, and local levels., 0, Rochester: Eastman Kodak Company BOOK: Corners, Spine, Boards Bumped; Light Shelf Rub to Boards; Edges Lightly Soiled; Slight Yellowing Due to Age. Sarah's plans to save her marriage with this journey are shattered when, thrown off balance by a dangerous combination of prescription drugs, she struggles to maintain her equilibrium in the face of the callousness of her husband, the sadistic machinations of their safari guide, the unscrupulous actions of a Nairobi shopkeeper, and the enigmatic behavior of a world-renowned photographer who appears almost magically whenever she is in need of a guardian angel., MCP Books, 2017-05-23, 3, Washington: Union for Democratic Action Educational Fund, 1962. 24p., 4x9.25 inches, very good in stapled wraps. On the eve of World War II, America's newest submarine plunged helplessly to the North Atlantic bottom during a test dive. Miraculously, thirty-three crew members still survived. While their wives and girlfriends waited in nearly unbearable tension on shore, their ultimate fate would depend on one man. In this thrilling true narrative of terror, heroism and courage in the depths of a malevolent ocean, prizewinning author Peter Maas brings us in vivid detail a blow-by-blow account of the disaster and its uncertain outcome. The sub was the Squalus. The man was a U. S. Navy officer, Charles "Swede" Momsen, an extraordinary combination of visionary, scientist and man of action. Until his advent, it was accepted that if a submarine went down, her crew was doomed. But Momsen, in the face of an indifferent, often sneering naval bureaucracy, battling red tape and disbelieving naysayers every step of the way, risked his own life again and again against the unknown in his efforts to invent and pioneer every escape and rescue device, every deep-sea diving technique, to save an entombed crew. With the crippled, partially flooded Squalus lost on the North Atlantic floor, Momsen faced his personal moment of truth: Could he actually pluck those men from a watery grave? Had all his work been in vain? The legacy of his death-defying probes into our inner space remains with us today, and in this depiction of the perseverance and triumph of the human spirit, Swede Momsen is given his rightful place in the pantheon of true American heroes. Like all good midshipmen were required to do, Scrimgeour took great pride in writing his journals and was careful to recount every event with marked sincerity. Appalled by some of the actions of the British Admiralty and the Germans alike, Scrimgeour risked court-martial to record some of the more notorious incidents during World War I, and what really happened...His candid way of writing coupled with an articulate and imaginative turn of phrase has left us with first hand evidence shedding light on some extraordinary moments of the Great War.* A FINE copy of the 1st./1st. thus with NO MAJOR FAULTS.*, Conway, 5, US,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn, and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,glossy,laminated b/w photographic upper wrap, publisher advert to rear wrap; with negligible shelf-wear and minimal creasing to edges - no nicks or tears present - no bumping to edges or corners.Miniscule creasing to head+foot of spine/ backstrip.Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight and near pristine.Bright, unblemished, publisher's red cloth boards with black ink stamped letters to spine/backstrip and b/w map illustrated endpapers.US,8vo HB+d/dj,1st edn,xiipp+2-224pp [paginated] includes half-title+title pages, separate contents+ illustrations lists/tables,a preface,10 chapters,S-39 plan+elevation, b/w maps,24pp b/w contemporary photographs between pp130/31, afterword,a bibliography and an index. "Japan has started hostilities, govern yourselves accordingly." That message at 0330 on December 8,1941,found the submarine S-39 - a veteran of 16 years on the China station - anchored in the Philippine harbour of Masbate. 'Pigboat 39' is the gripping story of this venerable submarine and the courage, skill, and suffering of her officers and men.Working together in the tight and perilous confines of the old sub, fighting with her primitive equipment, they manage to sink two enemy ships, then to elude the onrushing Japanese and slip through the Sunda Strait to a temporary haven in Australia, before sailing to further action in the Solomon Islands. But Pigboat 39 is more than a tale of war at sea. From navy records and from the letters, journals, and still-lively memories of the S-39's men and their wives and sweethearts,Bobette Gugliotta has woven a remarkable portrayal of American service life before and during WWII:of the social life of officer's families in the vanished world of prewar Manila; of teenage sailors and their girlfriends on movie dates in Oakland on the eve of the war; of the peace-time Asiatic Fleet and its dependent families moving north to the cool of Tsingtao in summer; of sailors on brief and raucous liberty in Asiatic ports; of reluctant wives evacuated with their children aboard a jammed transport as war approaches; of the men and women who survived the dangers, privation, and boredom of the Pacific war."There are no heroes in Pigboat 39," Gugliotta writes,"unless everyone is." Kennedy: Apostle of Change is a review, largely in his own words, of the public record of Robert Francis Kennedy, the man who polarized American public opinion to an extent unmatched by any recent major political figure. What manner of man was this younger brother of John F. Kennedy? What were his positions on the important domestic and international issues of our day? Were the changes in his outlook over the past few years the result of honest growth? He ignited the imagination of many with statements that were frequently controversial, sometimes daring or even radical. He aroused many to feelings of blind adoration and vindictive hatred - often without knowledge or reason. This is a careful review of the meanings and legacies of a dynamic political figure who, but for an assassin's bullet, might have been President of the United States. - and - For the past several years, Douglas Ross has worked and lived with the speeches, statements, books, and positions of Robert F. Kennedy. His own full-time job as co-director of the Volunteer Placement Corps in Detroit went hand in hand with this task. In just under one year, Mr. Ross and his very small organization have placed 2,500 high school graduates from ghetto areas in jobs, job-training programs, and colleges. The same schools previously placed some 15 per cent of this total in equivalent circumstances. It is his desire that every high school graduate have some place to go. Robert F. Kennedy, in carrying on the mandate of his brother, John F. Kennedy, sought to activate and involve the young people of this country. He sought to right the wrongs of the persecuted and disenfranchised. This is the work that Douglas Ross is doing; and in light of the extraordinary and tragic circumstances surrounding the publication of this book, we feel it is important to note this in the hope that it will be of some small benefit in involving more and more people in similar pursuits. In these troubled times it becomes apparent that the best among us are the involved. Robert F. Kennedy: Apostle of Change was initiated late in 1966 in an attempt to review and present Robert F. Kennedy's public record for use in this current election year. The work became more comprehensive; its importance grew, and one delivery date after another was by-passed. It had been completed, though not wholly typed, when, on June 5, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy was struck down by an assassin's bullet. That text has not been altered. Its impartial presentation will enable the reader to place Robert F. Kennedy in a personal perspective. However, an appendix has been added to include the four position papers issued for the recent state primaries and Edward M. Kennedy's eulogy at St. Patrick's Cathedral on June 8, 1968.-June 9, 1968, The Editors.. First Thus 1st Printing. Mass Market Paperback. The chapters in this study reflect 15 years of research in the Canadian province of Alberta, a region which has the highest suicide rate in young males in Canada. The book attempts to answer questions such as: what meanings and values do contrasted groups attach to the concept of suicide?; is the greater prevalence of suicidal behaviour in the young reflected in the meanings they attach to suicidal actions?; are young people experiencing more stress than the older generation?; do some forms of child abuse, particularly sexual abuse, have a sequel in suicidal behaviours and related mental health problems in young adult women, and in adolescent males and females; are the struggles for homosexual identity associated with suicidal behaviours in young males; and the role of poor self-esteem. In addition it asks: can this causal chain of events be reversed by therapeutic intervention which uses group counselling to increase self-esteem and enhance social support?; are Aboriginal people in the Province of Alberta at special risk for suicide; are their sub-types of suicide which imply different kinds of preventive and treatment strategies?; has the increase in the male youth suicide rate been associated with an increase in diagnosable psychiatric disorders?; how can knowledge about suicide in high rate area be translated into a comprehensive strategy of suicide prevention education; and do telephone crisis lines and crisis centres prevent suicidal behaviours?. During the early part of World War One Captain Gwatkin-Williams commanded the armed boarding steamer Tara operating off Ireland. The ship was sunk by German sub U 35 in 1916 and held prisoners until March 17, 1916 when they were rescued - the Captain's narrative of that experience in his book, Prisoners of the Red Desert. In the rest of Black Ensign, Captain Gwatkin-Williams record his time in the North Seas and his observations about the Russian Navy. "Black Ensign" refers to the little ships in that war Navy - destroyers, tugs, trawlers, boarding steamers, others, that were allowed to fly the white flag but often chose instead a black banner to signify their "grubby and insignificant piratic selves" (Preface). ; Illustrated; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 238 pages ., Hutchinson, 3, London England: Macmillan. From navy records and from the letters, journals, and still-lively memories of the S-39's men and their wives and sweethearts,Bobette Gugliotta has woven a remarkable portrayal of American service life before and during WWII:of the social life of officer's families in the vanished world of prewar Manila; of teenage sailors and their girlfriends on movie dates in Oakland on the eve of the war; of the peace-time Asiatic Fleet and its dependent families moving north to the cool of Tsingtao in summer; of sailors on brief and raucous liberty in Asiatic ports; of reluctant wives evacuated with their children aboard a jammed transport as war approaches; of the men and women who survived the dangers, privation, and boredom of the Pacific war."There are no heroes in Pigboat 39," Gugliotta writes,"unless everyone is." Kennedy's Eulogy at St. Patrick's Cathedral, June 18, 1968; Robert Kennedy's Position Papers for the Presidential Campaign. SYNOPSIS: Robert F. Kennedy: Apostle of Change is a review, largely in his own words, of the public record of Robert Francis Kennedy, the man who polarized American public opinion to an extent unmatched by any recent major political figure.
