Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Many people believe that a good deal of mental illness is preventable. But few have a clear idea of what needs to be done, and there is little agreement about where priorities for social action lie. In Preventing Mental Illness, Jennifer Newton reviews the research literature relating to prevention, and focuses on depression and schizophrenia as examples of what might be possible. She summarizes what is known about their distribution and causes, considers the extent to which it may be possible to prevent their onset or recurrence, and discusses the evidence that attempts to do so have been successful. Possibilities for prevention are considered in three different approaches: through a developmental view of the life history of 'high risk' individuals; through an examination of the personal resources which can be made available within the current social circumstances of 'high risk' individuals; and through looking at the way social structures (like parenting and work roles) influence individuals' susceptibility to disorder. While revealing a large number of opportunities for preventive work, the many difficulties in implementing new programmes are not underestimated. Jennifer Newton concludes that effective preventive action needs to be specifically aimed at people most vulnerable to disorder. Key issues for any intervention programme will concern the opportunities and capability such 'high risk' individuals have to control the circumstances of their own lives, to gain self-esteem, and to make and maintain supportive relationships. Voluntary community resources are seen to be an essential component of preventive services., DE, [SC: 4.50], gebraucht; wie neu, gewerbliches Angebot, [GW: 550g], Banküberweisung, Offene Rechnung, PayPal, Internationaler Versand<
