Paperback / softback. New. 'Masterfully opens up a little explored realm: how the quest for religion and spirituality drives hundreds of millions of Chinese' Pankaj Mishra 'A fascinating odyssey ... a nuanced group portrait of Chinese citizens striving for non-material answers in an era of frenetic materialism' Julia Lovell, Guardian 'The reappearance and flourishing of religion is perhaps the most surprising aspect of the dramatic changes in China in recent decades...this is a beautiful, moving and insightful book' Michael Szonyi In no society on Earth was there such a ferocious attempt to eradicate all trace of religion as in modern China. But now, following a century of violent antireligious campaigns, China is awash with new temples, churches, and mosques - as well as cults, sects, and politicians trying to harness religion for their own ends. Driving this explosion of faith is uncertainty - over what it means to be Chinese, and how to live an ethical life in a country that discarded traditional morality and is still searching for new guideposts. The Souls of China is the result of some fifteen years of studying and travelling around China. The message of Ian Johnson's extraordinary book is that China is now experiencing a 'Great Awakening' on a vast scale. Everywhere long-suppressed religions are rebuilding, often in new forms, and reshaping the values and behaviours of entire communities. Ian Johnson is as happy explaining the wonders of the lunar calendar as talking to the yinyang man who ensures proper burials. He visits meditation masters and the charismatic head of a Chengdu church. The result is a rich and funny work that challenges conventional wisdom about China. Xi Jinping, China's current leader, has put a return to morality and Chinese tradition at the heart of his ideas for his country - but, Johnson asks, at what point will the rapid spread of belief form an unmanageable challenge to the Party's monopoly on power?, 6, Anchorage, Alaska: Publication Consultants, 10/1/09. First Edition. Perfect Bound. Like New/Like New. Kitt Buchanan is young, rich, a champion athlete at the top of his sport, and life is training, travel, and triumph. Talk shows, interviews, magazine articles, fan clubs. Unlimited bank accounts. Can he not be a self-indulgent jerk? Is it possible to be outrageously gifted and balanced too? His focus is a little ball, excellence, getting better and better in less and less. But life abruptly changes, and he has no one to blame but himself. And a few others. But who? And why? And where is the line between courage and stupidity? In Break Point Down a repeat Grand Slam champion follows a dream that quickly gets away from him. Now the skills that made him a champion must make him a man., Publication Consultants, 10/1/09, 5, New York: Arcade Publishing, 2017. BI3 - A first edition (stated with complete numberline) hardcover book SIGNED and dated by author on the title page in very good condition in very good dust jacket. Book has some chipping and wear on the bottom cover edge, dust jacket and book have some bumped corners, light discoloration and shelf wear. A novel of many crimes. The first in the Darby Holland crime novel series. Lucky Supreme is an intuitive thrill ride from start to finish. It is the first of a trilogy featuring Darby Holland, Delia, and the other unforgettable nocturnal residents of Old Town. Jeff Johnson is a fresh new voice in noir, ready to take his place beside the great crime writers of today. 8.5"x6", 294 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. The night world of Old Town, Portland, Oregon, has gone mad in the grip of gentrification, and at the center of it all is Lucky Supreme, a seedy tattoo parlor, whose proprietor is a street-bred artist with a unique approach to problem solving. Darby Holland has enough on his radar, but when some flash (tattoo artwork) stolen from him resurfaces in California he can't help himself. His efforts to reclaim it set him on a dangerous path, dragging along his delightfully eccentric colleagues, including the brains behind his brawn, Delia, a twiggy vinyl-clad punk genius secretly from the other side of the tracks. No one knows why the art signed "Roland Norton, Panama, 1955" is worth anything or how it came to hang on the walls of a tattoo shop in Portland, Oregon. Only the deranged former owner can say - and he's not talking. Before the wrecking balls swing through Old Town in the name of "progress," Darby must settle old scores and face new demons to save his reputation, his shop, and his sanity. He has secrets of his own, and a tattoo shop in Old Town was a perfect place to hide, but when cash, lies, crime, and history collide, Darby Holland will need his ramshackle skill set, his wits, and a lot of luck to rise to the top of a human food chain, or be eaten alive.. Dust jacket in Mylar jacket protector. ; 9.10 X 6.10 X 1.30 inches; 368 pages; "An unidentified man storms a television studio where KiddieFame, a controversial childrens talent show wherein kids who are too talented are killed off, is being filmed. He is armed with an explosive device, and issues only a single demand: an interview with journalist Thom Pegg. Its a strange request, everyone agrees. A disgraced former investigative journalist, caught fabricating sources, Pegg is down on his luck and working for a lowly tabloid. The demand surprises everyone Pegg most of all, and he is reluctant to play a role. But pressure from federal authorities leaves little choice, and so it is that Thom Pegg finds himself the envy of all the high-level journalists on hand as he makes his way into the darkened studio to uncover the truth.Outside, as the hostage taking heads into its third day, enthralled and horrified onlookers watch the drama unfold through a constant stream of media speculation and rumours that race through the crowd. In the throes of this crisis two characters one running from former glory and the other from corporate burnout meet and instinctively connect. Eve is an Olympic gold medalist and much-loved local daughter who jogs the citys streets at night and searches for her long-lost brother, Ali, in its shadowy corners. Rabbit is a secretive street artist who is just completing a massive project involving strange installations on the rooftops of hundreds of buildings throughout the city. Both carry the scars of their pasts, and seem to be searching for a way to become whole. Its a fearful time, when people have serious doubts about the future and about each other, yet are compelled to come together to vent their anxiety and make themselves heard. Outside the studio, chaos reigns, and Eve and Rabbit must navigate police checkpoints as they skirt the unruly masses in pursuit of the truth of what happened to Ali. Inside the studio, however, its all about control, as Pegg listens to the hostage takers story and begins to realize the terrible, violent truth about what he has planned. When the crisis comes to a head, events collide and riots grip the streets. Prospects seem bleak as the tension of the hostage taking is unleashed upon the city. But when Rabbits secret installation is finally activated, people are shocked into seeing the power beauty still has in this world, and into recognizing the real possibility of hope. The Blue Light Project is a hard-hitting and emotionally wrought commentary on the forces that attract and repel us, and the faith that enables us to continue, even in our darkest hours." ., Knopf Canada, 2011, 4, Knopf Canada, 2011. 1st Edition . Atheneum Books, 1991. Hardcover. Used: Acceptable. Hardback with dustjacket - 1991 - good condition - - . This entertaining first novel is the humorous, sensitive story of 20-year-old J.O. Warren's long struggle to confront the father she has never known, a quest that has taken her from New York to L.A. J.O.'s clumsiness as a waitress at the Sun Maiden diner, and the example of her sexy, glamorous roommate, feed her daily insecurities as she tries to "psych myself to call my dad." A turning point comes when Rafi, the Israeli manager of the restaurant, teaches her to shoot a .357 Magnum: J.O. gets "tapped into the heart of something . . . Power." Her confidence is tested when she helps a co-worker deal with his insane brother; finally she doesn't need a gun or anything else to bolster her inner strength. J.O.'s keen perception of L.A. and its inhabitants the glitz and fakeness that seem to conceal some essential reality she seeks, all deftly interwoven with her memories of growing up in New York. Witty, fast-paced dialogue, surprising plot twists and the likable, even admirable J.O. make for a satisfying, heartwarming read. Novels about the South used to have a monopoly on squirrely characters with quirky names playing out oddball slices of life (e.g., Sarah Gilbert, Sarah Bird, early Rita Mae Brown), but this first novel takes place in Los Angeles and still has a character named Jambalaya Orleans (J.O. for short, and she's not even Southern, just conceived there!) hanging around with weird characters like Mr. Saul, who's building the Car of the Future with Mafia money he can't repay; busboy Andy and his ubiquitous pet rat Fear; and an Israeli obsessed with guns. The Israeli owns the Sun Maiden Cafe, where J.O. works as a novice waitress (picture the old Alice TV show, except in L.A.), and he also runs a marriage-for-green-card service. It's all held loosely together by J.O.'s search for her long-lost father, but nothing much happens, and what does is predictable and derivative. Aren't there enough novels out there like this, peopled with slice-of-lifers with strange names talking cute?, Atheneum Books, 1991, 2.5, London: Michael O'Mara Books. Fine/Near Fine. 2008. 2008.
