One place the two Souths - black and white - meet is in Judge Deborah Knott's courtroom.Busy with her reelection campaign and building a new house on land that has been in her family for generations, Deborah has both deep roots and a professional stake in her community. She's shaken when her nephew A.K. is arrested with a group of vandalizing teens at a local cemetery. Torn between her duty as a judge and her loyalty to her large, close-knit family, Deborah has to decide how far she can go to protect him. Then the first black church burns. Determined to investigate the arson in which A.K. has become a suspect, Deborah Knott is quickly swept into the dark undercurrents of prejudice, pain, and betrayal in this rural Southern county. Add to this the sudden arrival of a 1970s black activist turned public figure, the emerging secrets of an angry young woman, and the burning of two more churches, and Deborah faces a crisis that will challenge her political acumen, her detective skills, and her core beliefs. A literary treat, caviar to the general--or a bore to others--as well as a plotty labyrinth full of false bottoms and Nabokovian distortion mirrors. The greatest literary publisher in England, Wallace Wales, of Wales & Wales, whose list is stuffed with mummified giants, is dead. His underlings, of course, knew that Wales never read the manuscripts he published, only their synopses and blurbs. And now he has left behind a most twisted will: he wants no obsequies, only to be cremated in black tie, dinner jacket and black hose, after one night in the candlelit mortuary with editor Robert Racine as lone mourner. Imagine Racine's shock when at about 2:30 a.m. the corpse sits up, strikes him on the chest, hops out of his coffin and leaves the mortuary. In the morning, however, the mortician declares that the body was in the coffin when it was incinerated. Wallace Wales is officially, legally dead. Another part of Wales' will appoints Racine as his official biographer. Suddenly mysterious notes, in Wales' loathesome green ink, are appearing and directing Racine down one biographical blind alley after another. Quite humiliating! What's more, Wales & Wales has been invaded by a dunderheaded American publisher and by a detestable new set of editors, who are slowly and deliberately making all the wrong publishing moves for one of the foremost houses of its day, the publisher of Samuel Johnson and 28 versions of the Bible. New titles on the list include a World Anthology of Party Jokes, The Seven Charms of Adolf Hitler, Rags to Ritzes, Sex and the Country House, There's Money in Your Garden. I'm OK, Adolf's OK: The Secret Papers of Martin Bormann, How to Make Love to a Hermaphrodite, and Watergate Down: Richard Nixon and the Art of Power Maintenance. Racine follows a paper chase of green ink to Vienna, Paris, Florence and Toronto, and eventually ends up pulling a Wales: having himself declared dead and laid out in his coffin, in hopes that Wales will appear at his wake. . . First-novelist Walshe has produced a virtuoso bag of tricks that may be a roman ⤦ clef about current London publishing. Its surreal twists and laugh-out-loud mockery of footnoted academia are inventive and the sendup of London publishers tremendous fun. But, though Wales' Work rests nicely beside Pale Fire, the moving charms of Lolita are not yet in Walshe's grasp. It has hosted a number of prestigious golf tournaments.Pinehurst was founded by Boston soda fountain magnate James Walker Tufts. He purchased 5,500 acres (22 km2) for approximately $1.25 per acre in 1895, and opened the Holly Inn New Year's Eve of that year. The first golf course was laid out in 1897/98, and the first championship held at Pinehurst was the United North and South Amateur Championship of 1901. Pinehurst's best known course, "Pinehurst No. 2," was completed in 1907 to designs by Donald Ross, who became associated with Pinehurst for nearly half a century. After Pinehurst No. 2 was opened in 1907, Donald Ross said that the course was, "The fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed."From 1902 to 1951, Pinehurst was the home of the North and South Open, which was one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the United States at that time. Pinehurst is still home to the annual North and South Amateur Golf Championships, a series of tournaments which includes a Men's Championship inaugurated in 1901 and the Women's Championship that began two years later. The first PGA Tour major staged at Pinehurst was the PGA Championship in 1936, won by Denny Shute. In 1951, the resort hosted the Ryder Cup, and in 1991 and 1992 it was the venue for The Tour Championship. In 1999, Pinehurst staged its second major, the U.S. Open, won by Payne Stewart at the No. 2 course. There is currently a statue behind the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2 showing Stewart's famous victory pose after making a putt on the 18th hole to defeat Phil Mickelson. The U.S. Open returned in 2005, won by New Zealand's Michael Campbell. In 2011, Pinehurst No. 2 completed a $2.5 million, year-long renovation led by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The goal was to revert the course back to the original Donald Ross design. In an unprecedented move, the USGA brought both the men's U.S. Open and the U.S. Women's Open to Pinehurst No. 2 in 2014. The U.S. Open was scheduled at its normal time, ending on the third Sunday in June (Father's Day), and the women played the following week. The resort now has nine golf courses, three hotels, a spa and extensive sports and leisure facilities. It was ranked as the world's largest golf resort by the Guinness World Records before it was surpassed by Mission Hills Golf Club in China. The property's old-growth longleaf pine trees are home to the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker. The No. 2 course is included in the Links and the Tiger Woods PGA Tour video game series; the No. 8 course is also available for the Links game. Both Pinehurst No. 2 and Pinehurst No. 8 are available to play on E6 software.Pinehurst was owned by the Tufts family until 1970, when it was sold to Malcom McLean. After the property was acquired by a set of banks in 1982, it was sold to Robert H. Dedman, Sr., founder of ClubCorp. When the Dedman family sold ClubCorp, they retained Pinehurst. In June 1999, National Public Radio reported that the Pinehurst Resort was using threats of trademark infringement lawsuits to prevent any businesses located in the area of Pinehurst village from using the term "Pinehurst" in their business names.-------------------------------Southern Pines is a town in Moore County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 13,124. It is home of the historic golf resort, Pinehurst Resort. A large portion of the central village, including the resort complexes, is a National Historic Landmark District, designated in 1996 for its landscape design (by Frederick Law Olmsted) and its significance in the history of golf in the United States. In 1895, James Walker Tufts purchased 500 acres (2.0 km2), and eventually purchased an additional 5,500 acres (22 km2), of land for approximately $1.25 per acre in the North Carolina Sandhills, with the vision of building a "health resort for people of modest means". Tufts retained Frederick Law Olmsted to design the village, which features curving lanes and a pictureseque central green.Originally dubbed Tuftstown during development, Tuftstown became the village of Pinehurst, and home of the Pinehurst Resort. In 1890, the village became a municipality. The first golf course at Pinehurst Resort was laid out in 1897-1898. The first championship held at Pinehurst was the United North and South Amateur Championship of 1901. The best known course, Pinehurst No. 2, was designed by Donald Ross and completed in 1907. Pinehurst Race Track was established in 1915. The resort now has nine golf courses, three hotels, a spa, and extensive sports and leisure facilities. In 1999, National Public Radio reported that many local business owners in Pinehurst were upset because the Pinehurst Resort was using lawsuits to prevent local businesses from using the term "Pinehurst" in the names of their businesses. The village council sought a written guarantee from the Pinehurst Resort that it would not force any business in the village to remove the name "Pinehurst" from its name unless the business is a direct competitor. The request came a week later in a local newspaper. The village also sued the resort over control of the name shared between the resort and village. The Lloyd-Howe House, Pinehurst Historic District and Pinehurst Race Track are listed on the National Register of Historic Places., 2013, 0, London: David & Charles, 1979.
