Very Good/Very Good. 9x6x1. 1976 signed first edition, Faber and Faber (London), 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches tall x 2 1/2 inches thick red buckram cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt design to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, pictorial endpapers, illustrated with black-and-white images of marks, ix, 728 pp. Prior owner's correspondence with the author's firm and London assay office laid in. Nicely signed on the title page by Arthur Grimwade (1913-2002), British antiquarian and expert in silversmithing and goldsmithing. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a slightly soiled and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. Signed copies of this classic are rare in the market. ~N~ [5.0P] The most important contribution to the study of English silver since the publication of Sir Charles Jackson's English Goldsmiths at the beginning of the 20th century, Arthur Grimwade's masterful work is the result of 20 years research. It comprises lists of all 'makers' marks in the surviving London Goldsmiths Hall registers, with virtually all except the very minor silversmith marks illustrated - some 4,000 marks - plus brief information, especially dates, for each smith. Details of the minor smiths, including the bucklemaker marks are confined to the mark, address and dates of punch registration. For everyone else Grimwade gives all the information he can squeeze in, with his very extensive research covering father, apprenticeship details, changes of address and more.
