Tis better to be frozen cold than Apache kilt. Death is a promise. Scintillating action. Snarky dialogue. Sensational scenery. Insightful characterization. Sexy, undying love. Chaa and her handsome hunks lead us on another adventure, straight into the target zone. In 1885, Arizona Territory is a raw, brutal, unforgiving frontier. Our well armed Apache heroes decide to take the train out there to visit family. Maybe because the Apache are everyone's whipping boys. A spinoff of Barbara Nevilles Spirit Animal series, with characters that longtime readers will recognize. Join our favorite intrepid adventurers as they travel through the Wild West on, and off, the Arizona and New Mexico Railroad. You'll see the wild, untamed American Southwest at its best, and worst. This historic western thriller takes place in Arizona Territory, USA and the state of Sonora, Mexico. An entire way of life is being ripped asunder, destroyed, crushed under the boot heel of what we call civilization. The railroad, while a great improvement in speed of access for both people and goods to the area, is yet another wrench in the toolbox of the white man in their war against the Apache. Geronimo and his band have been starved off the reservation by crooked Indian agents. Traditionally hunters, these noble, nomadic people are fighting for their lives, families and their very way of life. Mining is booming, which is the impetus for the extension of the railroad through this part of the country. Tombstone and Bisbee, mining boom towns, are growing like weeds. Other towns have been burned out, the pioneers run out, and generally destroyed by Apache raids and Civil War sympathies. The southern transcontinental railroad route in the US is complete. An offshoot, called the Arizona and New Mexico Railroad, connects it to a Mexican rail line that runs south to Guaymas, Sonora on the Sea of Cortez. The new railroad has far reaching effects on the economies and cultures of both places. Tomahawk Trail is a new take on the Spirit Animal series. Follow our intrepid heroes through a, sometimes life threatening, multi-cultural maze., CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2016, 5, Toronto, Ontario: Toront, ON: Toronto of Old, 1986, 1st edition, First Printing, 1986. ----------hardcover, a Near Fine example in a lightly rubbed Very Good+ dustjacket, ink gift inscription on front blank endpaper has been partially blacked out, signed by Filey who has also written a linitation number on the title page ( #185 of 1000 ), quite scarce in the hardcover edition, unpaginated but well over 100 pages, packed with b&w photos many of a vintage nature and certainly difficult to come by, contents include: Rapid Transit for All; Meet Mr Williams ( Henry Burt ); Rails and Horses; Mr Wright ( John Joseph ) Was Right; The Witch's Broom; Toronto by Trolley; The Ubiquitous Sir William ( Mackenzie ); The better Way, Finally, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo /// SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE/// ---sizes are approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)---. As the world's first railway, using steam locomotives regularly to haul passenger carriages and goods waggons along iron rails, the Liverpool & Manchester Railway formed the model for those that rapidly followed, in England and indeed in many countries overseas.Only thirty miles long,it changed dramatically a way of life that had barely altered for centuries, giving new impetus to the small port of Liverpool and the textile industry around Manchester, and galvanising Britain's Industrial Revolution. This book describes those astonishing pioneers and their motivations, the tragedies and triumphs, the public fears, and ruthless resistance by owners of canals, land and stagecoaches; and stormy debates in Parliament on this controversial project. There are the rumbustious personality clashes between Stephenson and Rennie,Locke,Vignoles, Cropper; the formidable problems of railway construction, tunnelling under Liverpool, and the incredible navvies. Then come the famous Rainhill Trials, Stephenson's Rocket triumph, and his brief encounter with a pretty, young actress.Accounts are given of the track, crude signalling, locomotives, carriages, waggons, stations, the new railwaymen and the horrendous suffering and deaths in this pioneering venture of trial and error.Examined is the influence of this railway, and of others that quickly followed,on trade and industry; on social reform, and the awakening processes of democracy. The Railway's operations and finances are explained, covering its fifteen years of independence.Liverpool & Manchester pioneers built many other new railways in Britain and overseas, and survived the Railway Mania.Progress of the line through to the twentieth century and the end of steam is briefly sketched. The final chapter portrays the 150th anniversary celebrations of 1980,a dazzling railway extravaganza of such range and content that may never be repeated - a fitting tribute to the most notable piece of railway in the world, and to the men who made it.
