The preachers of Strassburg, on the 23d of November, 1524, wrote to Luther for instruction in regard to this doctrine. They said: Although Carlstadt has not as yet convinced us of his opinion in regard to the Sacrament, explaining it in a symbolical sense, we must confess he has somewhat shaken us. Luther replied on the 15th of December, 1524: I confess, if Dr. Carlstadt, or any other man, had informed me five years ago that in the Sacrament only bread and wine were present, he would have shown me great service. I have suffered such hard temptations that I have struggled and wrestled, wishing to come out of it, because I clearly saw that with it I could have given popedom the greatest cuff. I also had two who wrote more ingeniously about it than does Dr. Carlstadt; they did not rack the words so presumptuously. But I am caught and cannot come out of it, the text stands too powerfully there and cannot be torn from its sense with words. For the instruction of the Christian people Luther now sent forth another powerful treatise, Against the Heavenly Prophets. In this treatise Luther showed what dangerous, fanatical principles were at the bottom of Carlstadts teaching and practice, and pointed out whither it must lead when Christian doctrine is based on human reason instead of the plain Word of God laid down in Holy Scripture. But Carlstadt would not be warned.
