This is a wise, humane, enriching novel. If it should prove to be Toni Morrisons last, it is quite a finale -- Allan Massie - Scotsman. Slim but powerful
A tale that is as forceful as it is affecting, as fierce as it is resonant -- Michiko Kakutani - New York Times. Morrison ... proves with God Help the Child that her writing is still as fresh, adventurous and vigorous as ever. ... Morrisons characteristically deft temporal shifts and precisely honed language deliver literary riches galore. And which this novel is very readable, the pleasure is in working for its deeper rewards. -- Bernadine Evaristo - Observer. And the writing. Oh wow, the writing. Not for nothing has Morrison been garlanded with a Novel Prize, Pulitzer and National Book Critics Circle Award. Theres always a sense of grand occasion when Morrison releases a book, and with good reason: the journey is always vivid, dazzling and rich, each paragraph a mealy morsel in its own right. A highly personal and affecting tale that manages to be deftly political, God Help the Child is emotionally rousing and gut-wrenching -- Tanya Sweeney - Irish Independent. A piece of mastery ... Sensitive to legacies of abuse, to pressures of racism, image, taboo and economics, and to the harmful fictions and common social madnesses of the modern Western world, it found an impossible-seeming, myth-like form to reveal the interconnections between these, never losing its streetwise footing in the process. -- Ali Smith - New Statesman, Books of the Year From the Author: Toni Morrison (born Chloe Anthony Wofford), is an American author, editor, and professor who won the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature for being an author "who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality." In 2001 she was named one of "The 30 Most Powerful Women in America" by Ladies' Home Journal. ., Vintage, 2016, 3, State University of New York Pre, 1991-06-30. Paperback. He was the last Founding Father to serve as president as well as the last president of the Virginia dynasty and the Republican Generation. His presidency coincided with the Era of Good Feelings, concluding the First Party System era of American politics. He is best known for issuing the Monroe Doctrine, a policy of limiting European colonialism in the Americas. Previously he served as governor of Virginia, a member of the United States Senate, U.S. ambassador to France and Britain, the seventh secretary of state, and the eighth secretary of war.Monroe served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He studied law under Thomas Jefferson from 1780 to 1783 and served as a delegate in the Continental Congress as a delegate to the Virginia Ratifying Convention. He opposed the ratification of the United States Constitution. In 1790, he won election to the Senate where he became a leader of the Democratic-Republican Party. He left the Senate in 1794 to serve as President George Washington's ambassador to France but was recalled by Washington in 1796. Monroe won the election as Governor of Virginia in 1799 and strongly supported Jefferson's candidacy in the 1800 presidential election. As President Jefferson's special envoy, Monroe helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase, through which the United States nearly doubled in size. Monroe fell out with his longtime friend James Madison after Madison rejected the MonroePinkney Treaty that Monroe negotiated with Britain. He unsuccessfully challenged Madison for the Democratic-Republican nomination in the 1808 presidential election, but he joined Madison's administration as Secretary of State in 1811. During the later stages of the War of 1812, Monroe simultaneously served as Madison's Secretary of State and Secretary of War. Monroe's wartime leadership established him as Madison's heir apparent, and he easily defeated Federalist candidate Rufus King in the 1816 presidential election.During Monroe's tenure as president, the Federalist Party collapsed as a national political force and Monroe was re-elected, virtually unopposed, in 1820. As president, Monroe signed the Missouri Compromise, which admitted Missouri as a slave state and banned slavery from territories north of the 36 30 parallel. In foreign affairs, Monroe and Secretary of State John Quincy Adams favored a policy of conciliation with Britain and a policy of expansionism against the Spanish Empire. In the 1819 AdamsOnís Treaty with Spain, the United States secured Florida and established its western border with New Spain. In 1823, Monroe announced the United States' opposition to any European intervention in the recently independent countries of the Americas with the Monroe Doctrine, which became a landmark in American foreign policy. Monroe was a member of the American Colonization Society which supported the colonization of Africa by freed slaves, and Liberia's capital of Monrovia is named in his honor.Following his retirement in 1825, Monroe was plagued by financial difficulties and died on July 4, 1831, in New York Citysharing a distinction with Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson of dying on the anniversary of U.S independence. Historians have generally ranked him as an above-average president., McGraw-Hill, 1971, 2.75, LONNDON ENGLAND: Penguin. In his l ong life of eighty-four years, he offered advice on attaining wea lth, organized public institutions, contributed to the birth of a nation, and negotiated with foreign powers to ensure its surviva l. Through the words of the elder statesman himself, The Autobi ography and Other Writings presents a remarkable insight into the man and his accomplishments and additional writings from Benjami n Franklin's wife and son provide a more intimate portrait of the husband and father who found himself a legend in his own time. Editorial Reviews About the Author Benjamin Franklin, statesman , philosopher, and man of letters, was born in Boston in 1706 of Protestant parents. He entered Boston Grammar School when he was eight and later attended George Brown Ell's school. When he was t welve his father apprenticed him to his half-brother James as a p rinter. James was later the publisher of the New England Courant, where Franklin's first articles, The Dogood Papers, were publish ed before he was seventeen. He went to Philadelphia in 1723 and p ursued his trade of printer. He was befriended by William Keith, Governor of Pennsylvania, who offered to help the young man get s tarted in business. Franklin left for England, where he hoped to arrange for the purchase of printing equipment. Arriving in Londo n in 1724, he was soon deserted by Keith, and again turned to pri nting for a livelihood. His privately printed Dissertation on Lib erty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain (1725) introduced him to le ading Deists and other intellectuals in London. A year later, he returned to Philadelphia, and by 1730 he had been appointed publi c printer for Pennsylvania. In 1731 he established the first circ ulation library in the United States; in 1743-44, The American Ph ilosophical Society. In 1748 he retired from the trade of printer but continued to advise and back his partner and to draw profit from the business. Poor Richard's Almanack was his most spectacul ar success as a publisher, having gone through numerous editions and been translated in many languages. During the next thirty-fiv e years he devoted himself largely to politics and diplomacy, but still wrote and engaged in scientific ventures. He resigned as M inister to France in 1785, returned to America, and was elected P resident of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Still concerned wit h the rights of the individual, he published papers encouraging t he abolition of slavery. He died in Philadelphia in 1790. ., Signet Classics, 2001, 3, Heritage Press, NY [1959].
