This is a very well put together collection of essays and interviews concerning the shooting of four Kent State university students by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. What makes this volume special and of interest to layman and scholar alike is that it displays no bias or vested interest. While each of the speakers or writers has a point to prove, the editor has been careful to gather opinions from both ends of the spectrum on this volatile issue--from the outrageous statement that the students deserved what they got to the conspiracy theory that this was a plot of the Nixon administration to put an end to student protest. In the middle are the peacemakers who strive to understand what caused the confrontation, and what can be learned from it more than ten years later. Obviously Kent State/May 4 will not put to rest the controversy surrounding the event it describes, but it allows the reader to look at the issues as objectively as possible, and for this and much more it is highly recommended." --Communication Quarterly "Extensively annotated bibliography. Highly recommended for all library levels."--Choice"...differs from other books on Kent State in that it concentrates upon the trauma of those touched by the violence of 4 May 1970, and upon how those touched sought to cope with the terrible experience and build upon it....Altogether this is a valuable addition to the literature of the Kent State tragedy and civil disturbances in general."<
