PM Press. PAPERBACK. 1604865008 ?Theft exists only through the exploitation of man by man?when Society refuses you the right to exist, you must take it?the policeman arrested me in the name of the Law, I struck him in the name of Liberty.? In 1887, Clément Duval joined the tens of thousands of convicts sent to the ?dry guillotine? of the French penal colonies. Few survived and fewer were able to tell the stories of their life in that hell. Duval spent fourteen years doing hard labor?espousing the values of anarchism and demonstrating the ideals by being a living example the entire time?before making his daring escape and arriving in New York City, welcomed by the Italian and French anarchists there. This is much more than an historical document about the anarchist movement and the penal colony. It is a remarkable story of survival by one man?s self-determination, energy, courage, loyalty, and hope. It was thanks to being true and faithful to his ideals that Duval survived life in this hell. Unlike the well-known prisoner Papillon, who arrived and dramatically escaped soon after Duval, he encouraged his fellow prisoners to practice mutual aid, through their deeds and not just their words. It is a call to action for mindful, conscious people to fight for their rights to the very end, to never give up or give in. More than just a story of a life or a testament of ideals, here is a monument to the human spirit and a war cry for freedom and justice. About Clément Duval: Clément Duval (1850?1935) was an infamous French illegalist, propagandist, and anarchist who was found guilty in 1886 of theft and attempted murder of a police officer. Originally sentenced to death, his sentence was commuted to deportation and hard labor in the French Guiana prison camps. After fourteen years and twenty escape attempts, Duval and fellow inmates set out on a rickety boat. He eventually reached New York City in 1901 and was welcomed by French and Italian anarchists. In 1929 Italian anarchist Luigi Galleani translated and published his full memoirs as Memorie autobiografiche. About Michael Shreve: Michael Shreve is a writer, translator, and language teacher currently living in Paris, France. His publications include first English translations by Voltaire, Jean Meslier, Marcel Schwob, and John Antoine Nau. About Marianne Enckell (Introduction): Marianne Enckell is an author, essayist, editor, translator, and librarian at the International Centre for Research on Anarchism (CIRA). . This is the fascinating story of how Nazi war criminals escaped from justice at the end of the Second World War by fleeing through the Tyrolean Alps to Italian seaports, and the role played by the Red Cross, the Vatican, and the Secret Services of the major powers in smuggling them away from prosecution in Europe to a new life in South America. The Nazi sympathies held by groups and individuals within these organizations evolved into a successful assistance network for fugitive criminals, providing them not only with secret escape routes but hiding places for their loot. Gerald Steinacher skillfully traces the complex escape stories of some of the most prominent Nazi war criminals, including Adolf Eichmann, showing how they mingled and blended with thousands of technically stateless or displaced persons, all flooding across the Alps to Italy and from there, to destinations abroad. The story of their escape shows clearly just how difficult the apprehending of war criminals can be. As Steinacher shows, all the major countries in the post-war world had 'mixed motives' for their actions, ranging from the shortage of trained intelligence personnel in the immediate aftermath of the war to the emerging East-West confrontation after 1947, which led to many former Nazis being recruited as agents turned in the Cold War. From Wikipedia: "Gerald Steinacher is an Assistant Professor of History and Hymen Rosenberg Professor of Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He was a Joseph A. Schumpeter Research Fellow at Harvard University during 2010-2011 and in 2009 a Visiting Scholar at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University. He lectured at the Universities of Innsbruck (Austria), Luzern (Switzerland) and Munich (Germany). In 2006 he was a Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Fellow at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Steinacher s research focuses on 20th Century Central European History with emphasis on Italian Fascism, National Socialism, Holocaust and intelligence studies. He has published two books, edited nine volumes, and wrote a large number of book chapters and journal articles on these topics. His post-doctoral research (Habilitation) examined the postwar fate of Nazis and Holocaust perpetrators and the institutions facilitating their escape from Europe. The result of this research came out as a book entitled, Nazis on the Run. How Hitler's Henchmen Fled Justice. This academic book was published in several countries with the English edition put out by Oxford University Press in 2011. Furthermore the book was recently awarded the 2011 National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category.", Oxford University Press, 2011, Cambridge University Press. Softcover. New. During the formative period of Islam, in the first centuries after Muhammad`s death, two particular intellectual traditions emerged, Sunnism and Shi`ism. Sunni Muslims endorsed the historical caliphate, while Shi`i Muslims, supporters of `Ali, cousin of the Prophet and the fourth caliph, articulated their own distinctive doctrines. The Sunni-Shi`i schism is often framed as a dispute over the identity of the successor to Muhammad, whereas in reality, Sunni and Shi`i Muslims also differ on a number of seminal theological doctrines concerning the nature of God and legitimate political and religious authority. This book examines the development of Shi`i Islam through the lenses of belief, narrative, and memory. It also covers a wide range of Shi`i communities from the demographically predominant Twelvers to the transnational Isma`ilis to the scholar-activist Zaydis. The portrait of Shi`ism that emerges is that of a distinctive and vibrant community of Muslims with a remarkable capacity for reinvention and adaptation, grounded in a unique theological interpretation of Islam. Ronald Haydn Preston was born on March 12 1913. Having graduated with a degree in Economics from the LSE in 1935, he spent three years working as industrial secretary of the Student Christian Movement (SCM), then a large and influential ecumenical body. Drawn to Holy Orders, he then went to Ripon Hall, Oxford - noted for its liberal theological outlook - and, as a member of St Catherine's Society (now College), took a First in Theology. From 1940 to 1943 he was a curate in Sheffield, then returned to the SCM as its study secretary and editor of The Student Movement - tasks for which his combination of political, economic and theological skills equipped him perfectly. By 1948, Preston's reputation was such that he secured an appointment as Lecturer in Ethics at Manchester University - a post he held for the next 22 years, for the first 15 of which he was also Warden of St Anselm Hall, a residence for theological students. Preston was awarded a Doctorate of Divinity by Oxford University in 1983. His literary output was extensive. Besides innumerable articles in theological journals, contributions to dictionaries and symposia on subjects such as strikes, penal reform, capital punishment, artificial insemination and the welfare state, he wrote several substantial books. These include Technology and Social Justice (1971); Religion and the Persistence of Capitalism (1979); The Future of Christian Ethics (1987); Religion and the Ambiguities of Capitalism (1991); and Confusions in Christian Social Ethics (1994). **. [EAN: 9781316607992], Nieuw boek, [SC: 8.31], [PU: Cambridge University Press], NA, During the formative period of Islam, in the first centuries after Muhammad`s death, two particular intellectual traditions emerged, Sunnism and Shi`ism.
