Details zum Buch
From the Shtetl to the Stage: The Odyssey of a Wandering Actor

Alexander Granach, who before he died was playing Tomasino, the head fisherman in A Bell for Adano, has told here the inspiring story of his first rise to success on the stage. This is the story of a sensitive peasant child from Galicia suddenly seized with a passion for the theater, who overcame insuperable odds to become an actor-and had to break both legs to do it. Born in what is now southern Poland, Granach began working at the age of six in his father's bakery, where the heavy tasks were too much for him and made him remarkably knock-kneed. Eight years later he saw his first play and, completely stage struck, made his way eventually to Berlin and Max Reinhardt's school. Granach faced many trials without flinching before he won his way to major roles in Vienna, Poland, Switzerland, and Germany. This, his autobiography, is touched with youthful charm and enthusiasm and reflects the glamour and excitement of the European theater between wars. To act well is to overcome all artificial distinctions between stage, craft, and audience. With these feelings Granach finally played the part he longed to play, Shylock, the part he had dreamed of. The Shakespearean play allowed the author to express global catastrophe as well as personal sorrow.
