Aboard were seven white men, a crew of forty islanders, and one woman: a short-haired, barefoot, cigarette-smoking Ameri American, Fanny Van de Grift Stevenson, wife of the famous novelist. From the opening paragraph, "Some thirty or forty miles east of the coast of Australia there lay, during the night of the 26th of July, 1853 (which is the depth of winter in that part of the world) , a very small vessel, cutter rigged, and of only 16 tons register. Her condition was deplorable. Her bulwarks were all washed away, and every thing, including the only boat she carried swept off the deck. In addition to this, she was leaking considerably. Her crew consisted of the writer of this, who was captain, a mate, four sailors, and a young man who acted as steward and cook. Besides these the captain had his wife on board. This little vessel was called the Thomas." The author's first-hand account of the survival of the ship's party on the Clarence River, New South Wales, Australia, among natives, after the ship was put to land by a severe storm. The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American novelist J ack London about a literary critic, survivor of an ocean collision, who com es under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediatel y sold out before publication on the strength of London's previous The Call of the Wild. Ambrose Bierce wrote, "The great thing-and it is among the gr eatest of things-is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen... the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime. .. The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieti es, is awful."Like The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf tells the story of a soft, domesticated protagonist, in this novel's case an intellectual man na med Humphrey van Weyden, forced to become tough and self-reliant by exposur e to cruelty and brutality. The story starts with him aboard a San Francisc o ferry, called Martinez, which collides with another ship in the fog and s inks. He is set adrift in the Bay, eventually being picked up by Wolf Larse n. Larsen is the captain of a seal-hunting schooner, the Ghost. Brutal and cynical, yet also highly intelligent and intellectual (though highly biased in his opinions, as he was self-taught), he rules over his ship and terror izes the crew with the aid of his exceptionally great physical strength.
