This is the first in a series dedicated to the understanding of tropical diseases. This volume examines the basic biology and clinical expression of lymphatic-dwelling filarial parasites, parasites affecting over 128 million people in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Although it is responsible for the disfiguring elephantiasis, infection with this parasite leads to a spectrum of clinical manifestations. The underlying pathogenetic mechanisms of infection, its epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this often devastating vector-borne diseases will be the focus of this book.Contents: Lymphatic Filariasis: A Historical Perspective (T V Rajan)Lymphatic-Dwelling Filariae (A L Scott)The Population Dynamics and Epidemiology of Lymphatic Filariasis (E Michael)Resistance to Infection with Lymphatic-Dwelling Filarial Parasites (J W Kazura)The Clinical Manifestations of Lymphatic Filariasis (V Kumaraswami)Diagnosis of Lymphatic Filarial Infections (J McCarthy)Treatment of Lymphatic Filariasis (D G Addiss & G Dreyer)Towards Eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (E A Ottesen)Immunology of Lymphatic Filariasis: Current Controversies (R M Maizels et al.)Worms and Microorganisms Can Cause Lymphatic Disease in Residents of Filariasis-endemic Areas (G Dreyer & W F Piessens)Readership: Medical doctors, students and researchers in cell/molecular biology, microbiology and immunology.
