The exasperation of Constantinople lasted for three days. Furious at the escape of the Emperor, the mob vented their wrath against him in effigy. But the effigy was of flesh and blood; a miserable monk, whose known fidelity to his master procured him the distinction of having his head carried round the city on a spear, followed by a howling multitude, who proclaimed it with scrupulous preciseness, "the head of the friend of the enemy of the Holy Trinity."

The Factions had a glorious time of it, and revelled in murder, outrage, and incendiarism, which they dispensed with strict impartiality to both orthodox and heretics, being guided in their choice of victims chiefly by the probabilities of booty.
