The inscription reads: "Gustav Hasford (in blue sharpie) For my best friend in the whole world __________ [Your name here] (in red sharpie) from Gus, San Clemente, Feb. 29, 1990" (in blue sharpie). The author's name and address ink stamp is on the same page. Laid-in is a full page letter, folded once, signed by the author requesting a review of this book. The letter is addressed to "Attention: Book Review Editior" and is misdated February 24, 1980 [not 1990]. The letter has the heading "For Immediate Release: Funeral Notice" and the first line reads: "My novel, THE PHANTOM BLOOPER, was born dead this month." Photographs upon request. The letter expresses Hasford's anger over Bantam's refusal to publicize this novel or to send out review copies, so the author sent out some himself with the suggestion reviewers bypass Bantam and provide a copy of any review to him directly. THE PHANTOM BLOOPER is the author's second book, a sequel to THE SHORT-TIMERS, which was adapted into Stanley Kubrick's hit film FULL METAL JACKET. Signed copies like this are scarce, especially with the review request. Because the author died in early 1993, he won't be signing any more. Fine condition in a bright and shiny Very Good+ dust jacket - only lightly rubbed, with 3 short (quarter-inch) closed tears. No chips. Gustav Hasford's ink stamped name and address in the top corner of this letter, a single sheet folded twice. This is a first edition, first printing with a full page inscription in red and blue marker from Hasford. Signed at the top of the inscription in full, in blue marker, under which is printed in red marker, "For my best friend/ in the whole world:" with a long red line and in brackets under the line "Your name here". this copy is then signed in blue marker "From: Gus" with San Clemente and the date Feb. 29, 1990. With Gustav Hasfords red ink name and address stamp. Hasford was very unhappy with his publisher, Bantam. He thought his editor had "gone insane", as stated in his "Funeral Notice" and sent out inscribed copies of his book for review at his own expense.
