Although she is prirnarily remernbered now for her many sensitive treatments of maternity, she was equally irnporrant as a force behind the formation of some of the principal art collections in the United States. And throughout the many years she spent absorbing the influences of European avantgarde art in Paris, Mary Cassatt always remained 'simply and frankly American'. Although she was never encouraged by her father to paint, Mary Cassatt did enjoy the advantages of a prosperous family background in her struggle to succeed in a male~dominated art world. She was able to travel from America to train in Europe at what was a particularly opportune time; and she was able to pursue her career among the critically derided Impressionists rather than resigning herself to a career of portraiture and flower painting. It was here that she assimilated what she had learned from her encounters with the Old Masters and gradually developed ~ alongside contemporary heroes such as Degas ~ her own particular modern vision. Always enthusiastic about new ideas, Cassatt was constantly exploring the potential of new techniques. It was not until 1891, for instance, that she exhibited her bold and colourful prints. She still tended to turn to her family for her models, however, for she concentrated on simple domestic scenes, especially of the everyday lives of women. In 1892 her lifelong struggle for equal opportunities for women was acknowledged when she received the prestigious commission to paint the Modern Woman mural for the Women's Building at the Chicago World's Fair. Cassatt's life, though marred at its end by near~blindness, was a happy example of ambition and energy matched with talent and success in a man's world., Books<
