Pada also means the base; Dhammapada is then the base or the foundation of religion. Pada is taken as a part of a verse, and Dhammapada are the utterances of religion. The Dhammapada consists of 423 melodious Pali verses, uttered by the Buddha on or three hundred occasions, to suit the temperaments of the listeners in the course of His preaching tours during forty-five years. Circumstances that led to these noble utterances are presented in the form of stories, together with traditional interpretations of the Pali verses and Technical terms, in the voluminous Commentary initially written by Buddhaghosa. The Dhammapada has always drawn attention of both the laymen and scholars all over the world. It appeals in its simplicity and the depth of meaning on the Anthology of verses on dhamma. Each verse is Pregnant with great significance and worthy of contemplation and deep Study for its beauty, elegant Idiom and moral upliftment. An afflicted mind gets easily calmed and a troubled Ego is soon pacified by reading even a part of a gatha. The Dhammapada verses are generally connected with incidents in the life of the Buddha and illustrate the method of Teaching adopted by him. The Dhammapada, the earliest portion of the Pali Scriptures give the ""words of the truth"", that is, of the Dhamma. The `word` is the body of Truth` in the same way as the psychosomatic organism is the body of `life`. And, as life passes away from the body, so also Truth passes away from the Word. And, then, the ever-new Creation goes on. The whole Doctrine taught by the All-Enlightened One. And the first night, relaxing under a Bodhi tree near Bodh Gaya by the side of a small river, Gautama on a fullmoon night, became enlightened. He was not doing anything for enlightenment. The enlightenment came out of the blue. Those six years of tremendous effort did not produce enlightenment, but those six years produced so much relaxation that enlightenment became possible. Enlightenment is not caused by effort. By effort, relaxation is caused. Enlightenment is not an effort of six years effort, but without those six years effort there would have been no enlightenment either. Enlightenment can be attained by anyone irrespective of the status, but one is to be compassionate. Nature is compassionate. Nature does not care whether he is an emperor or a beggar. The dialectics of life is that the people who make great effort for enlightenment may or may not achieve by their effort. One day they will have to give it all up, and in the moment of relaxation something opens up-and of course, you are not the doer, something happens to you. The Buddhas point out the path, and it is left for us to follow that path to save ourselves. ""To depend on others for salvation is negative, but to depend on oneself is positive"". The Buddhas does not claim the Monopoly of Buddhahood, which, as a matter of fact, is not the prerogative of any specially graced chosen person. He reached the highest possible state of perfection any person could aspire to, and without the closed first of a teacher. He revealed the only straight path that leads thereto. According to the Teaching of the Buddha anybody may aspire to that supreme state of perfection if he makes the necessary exertion. Lord Buddha`s story is not merely the story of a Prophet performing miracles of Supernatural deeds, but of a human being living the truths he had realised and asking others to realise and live those truths, and conferring on each individual the right to and capacity for self emancipation or nirvana.
