Deleuze and Gender provides an introduction to and overview of the critiques and uses of Deleuze's work in twentieth and twenty-first century gender studies and feminist theory. Over the last 40 years there has been a plethora of work published on the issue of gender. The aim of this book is to contribute to that discourse by using the conceptual toolbox of Gilles Deleuze to theorize gender, all with a view to examining the material effects of gender in everyday social and political life. Issues addressed include female circumcision, popular culture, the traffic in women and girls, microeconomic schemes, racism, home labor and environmental exploitation. Commencing with the premise that political thinking is necessarily oriented by the capitalist context in which we live, an idea Deleuze borrowed from Marx, this book will critically study how gender intersects with a capitalist system of production. Making gender debates and key concepts in Deleuze's work accessible to a student audience for the first time, the book situates both clearly and concisely in the context of larger philosophical and political debates and gives students a broad overview of the questions raised by putting Deleuze's work in conversation with gender studies and feminist theory.
