British Library [in association with] the Bibliographical Society, London, first edition, 2002. Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo,. 132 pp, plates. From the introduction: "Apart from illustrations, borders are the most important - and most frequent - major element of decoration in late fourteenth- and fifteenth-century English manuscripts. Yet borders have received little chronological or systematic study, that is, no analysis of their structure and components within a given period and no scrutiny that would record aspects of change in border elements and identify the chronology of design in structure and motif. A leaf drawn and coloured in one period does not fold or reflect light as in a later period, and its colour tonality may be rendered by different methods. Since borders seem to alter in style at a quicker chronological pace than the work of scribes, borders provide a narrower dating for a manuscript. Researchers who might otherwise have 'dated' their copy of a text to 'the fifteenth century' might be able, with some visual command of the development of English borders, to apply a period of at least a quarter-century to a book, a more acceptable range for discussion and study. At the same time, a systematic analysis of dated and datable borders would furnish terminology for description of other borders in other contexts. A further significant reason to survey later English borderwork is for an understanding of the hierarchical use of borders. Borders were employed to suggest the structure of a text, and it is helpful to know that a band or trellis border is a sign of the introductory page of a text.., even if followed by further band borders at book (rather than chapter) divisions; to know that a three-sided border is of lesser status than a full border; that, unless it occurs at a Table of Contents, the first border in a book is usually more elaborate, even if only by a few motifs, than the subsequent borders..; or to know that the most important border, identifiable by its position (usually the first text page) and its more elaborate rendering, may be by an artist different from the rest of the borders and initials in the book, a common hierarchy of style and/or ability. The first Atlas of the Bible to be treated geographically rather than historically, with detailed maps in colour and over 350 illustrations including superb aerial photography of the principal Biblical sites. 224 pages, plus index, clean and tight. This is the first Atlas of the whole Bible to treat its subject geographically rather than historically. The ancient Hebrew people have been called the people of the book. To this description we must add another, which is at the heart of the present Atlas, that they were also the people of the land, the land of the Bible. The book opens with a description of the Bible as a unique literary and religious phenomenon, how it came to be composed and how it has been transmitted to us through medieval manuscript copies and modern printed translations. The second section provides an outline of the historical background to the Bible, from the time of Abraham to the close of the New Testament period, accompanied by illustrative maps. The third and principal section discusses in detail and in turn the main geographical regions (roughly corresponding to the territories of the Twelve Tribes in Old Testament times) and the sites within them. The text, accompanied by regional maps and illustrated by generous use of colour photography and artwork, describes the history and main features of each region and site, and refers to incidents connected with them in the Old and New Testaments. This is a new approach to biblical history which is ideally suited to the format of a cultural atlas. Special features focus on such themes as biblical warfare, other contemporary religions, Herod's temple at Jerusalem, Jerusalem as Jesus knew it and the topography of the Passion. For ease of reference the book is equipped with a Chronological Table, Bibliography, Gazetteer and Index. Many of the splendid aerial photographs in this book are published here for the first time and have been selected from the unique collection of Pictorial Archive (Near Eastern History), Jerusalem. ., Macdonald, 1985, 2.5, London: Blandford Press, 1963. "On April 10, 2003, as the world watched a statue of Saddam Hussein come crashing down in the heart of Baghdad, a mob of looters attacked the Iraq National Museum. Despite the presence of an American tank unit, the pillaging went unchecked, and more than 15,000 artifacts--some of the oldest evidence of human culture--disappeared into the shadowy worldwide market in illicit antiquities. In the five years since that day, the losses have only mounted, with gangs digging up roughly half a million artifacts that had previously been unexcavated; the loss to our shared human heritage is incalculable. With The Rape of Mesopotamia, Lawrence Rothfield answers the complicated question of how this wholesale thievery was allowed to occur. Drawing on extensive interviews with soldiers, bureaucrats, war planners, archaeologists, and collectors, Rothfield reconstructs the planning failures--originating at the highest levels of the U.S. government--that led to the invading forces' utter indifference to the protection of Iraq's cultural heritage from looters. Widespread incompetence and miscommunication on the part of the Pentagon, unchecked by the disappointingly weak advocacy efforts of worldwide preservation advocates, enabled a tragedy that continues even today, despite widespread public outrage. Bringing his story up to the present, Rothfield argues forcefully that the international community has yet to learn the lessons of Iraq--and that what happened there is liable to be repeated in future conflicts. A powerful, infuriating chronicle of the disastrous conjunction of military adventure and cultural destruction, The Rape of Mesopotamia is essential reading for all concerned with the future of our past." - Publisher. André Nicolaevitch Grabar (1896 1990) was an historian of Romanesque art and the art of the Eastern Roman Empire and the Bulgarian Empire. Born and educated in Kyiv, Saint Petersburg and Odesa, he spent his career in Bulgaria (19191922) , France (19221958) and the United States (19581990) , and wrote all his papers in French. Grabar was one of the 20th-century founders of the study of the art and icons of the Eastern Roman Empire, adopting a synthetic approach embracing history, theology and interactions with the Islamic world. Discussing the connection between the Orthodox Christian faith and conservative aesthetics of the creators of Christian icons, Grabar explained, "Their role can be compared to that of musical performers in our day, who do not feel that their importance is diminished by the fact that they limit their talent to the interpretation of other people's work, since each interpretation contains original nuances." The author concentrates on the medieval period, from the Iconoclast emperors in 8th C to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. First an analytical survey then a detailed appreciation by periods of the Empire's acheivements in architecture, mosaic, painting, sculpture, manuscript illustration and other arts. ; Art of the World; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 225 pages ., Greystone Press, 1967, 3, Oxford - New York: Oxford University Press, 1982. From the introduction: "This analytical bibliography aims at presenting a convenient and expressive table of novelists over the period 1800-1950, with, for each of them, a few biographical notes, the titles of the novels of interest in the regional connexion, their varions editions so far as could be ascertained, and whenever possible, the scene of each novel. The authors thus classed chronologically will also be found in an alphabetical index at the end of the present volume, so that looking up any name will be made as easy as possible. Lastly it has been thought necessary to give an index of the regions, districts, and other frequently met with localities, with cross references to those writers of interest with regard to each of them. Completeness was aimed at, as much as accuracy. " According to Stevenson (in 'Victorian Fiction - A Guide to Research') , the Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature is more comprehensive but "The value of [Leclaire's] work rests in the index, which enables one to learn who wrote about a given county or area. 'BOOKS OF DAYS' have been treasured since medieval times as a way of providing inspiring thoughts and wisdom to contemplate in quiet moments. This beautifully illustrated example, with a telling quotation for each day of the year,is distilled from Eliis Peters' Cadfael Chronicles,in which her wealth of experience, knowledge and insight was recorded through the voice of her famous creation,Brother Cadfael. The Cadfael Chronicles are as rich in meaning and relevance today as they would have been in medieval times and these daily sayings will inspire both Brother Cadfael's devotees and those for whom the medieval detective mysteries are a joy to come. Ellis Peters (1913-1995) gained worldwide praise and recognition for her meticulous recreations of monastic life in the 12thC in the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael. The Cadfael Chronicles are,in fact,a skilful blend of fact and fiction. The first novel is set in the Spring of 1137, the second in the summer of 1138.Thereafter,they progress season by season, year by year, until December 1145,when the final novel ends.During the period, England was racked by a long fratricidal civil war, fought between the supporters of King Stephen and those of his cousin the Empress Maud.It started when Stephen seized the throne in 1135 and ended in 1153, when he signed a treaty designating Henry Plantagenet (Maud's son) as his successor. After Stephen's death the following year,Henry was crowned King Henry II. Many of us know the paintings of Queen Victoria. But what about the exceptional works of her own family, the rich and varied achievements of George III's family and the delightful needlework of Mary Queen of Scots - not to mention the paintings by present members of the Royal Family. The art of drawing has always been considered a princely attribute, and members of the British Royal Family have been extraordinarily active in pursuing a wide variety of artistic ventures. In this book Jane Roberts, Curator of the Print Room at Windsor Castle, tells the story of this prodigious activity for the first time, illustrating her narrative from the surviving works in the Royal Collection and elsewhere, and revealing the splendid artistic and historical riches of a royal treasure trove spanning five fascinating centuries. In the earlier period the book chronicles the needlework of Mary Queen of Scots and the introduction of the mezzotint by Prince Rupert. The prolific family of George III produced architectural designs, landscapes, silhouettes, prints, needlework and painted porcelain.Until the publication of this book, the best-known English royal artist has been Queen Victoria. Now her numerous works are set in the context of those of her mother, husband, children and grandchildren. This vivid and richly illustrated survey is completed with a discussion of the paintings by present members of the Royal Family, including the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles. Since then genetics has made tremendous advances in knowledge and technique and now occupies a pivotal position in the life sciences as the most powerful means for probing fundamental questions in cell biology, development, and evolution. The determination of sequences of complete genomes, the study of gene expression and genetic variation on a global scale, and the ability to rapidly amplify gene sequences and to achieve targeted gene disruptions are just some examples of major achievements in this field. Proliferation of new terms inevitably accompanies such remarkable progress. This new edition of the Dictionary addresses the needs of students, educators, and clinical geneticists for an authoritative and up-to-date reference work that not only defines the latest terms, but in most cases, also presents important ancillary encyclopedic information.A Dictionary of Genetics is unique in that it includes terms from a wide range of disciplines which now intertwine with genetics, including molecular biology, cell biology, medicine, botany, and evolutionary studies. Its 7,000 cross-referenced definitions are supported by an excellent collection of line drawings, tables, and chemical formulae. One-fifth of the Dictionary is devoted to six appendices to which the definitions are cross-referenced and which contain an extraordinary trove of supplementary information. This includes a chronology of important advances spanning the years 1590 to 2005, lists of useful internet sites and periodicals, a classification of living organisms into an evolutionary hierarchy, and a sample table of genome sizes and gene numbers. These features make A Dictionary of Genetics a lexicon unparalleled in the field. For the first time, the Dictionary is available on Oxford Reference Online (ORO): Premium Collection!, 0<

John Wood Campbell Jr. (June 8,1910 to July 11,1971) was an American sci-fi writer and sci-fi digest/magazine editor. As editor of 'Astounding Science Fiction' (later called 'Analog Science Fiction and Fact') from late 1937 until his death,he is generally credited with shaping the Golden Age of Science Fiction. The Street & Smith issues began as 'Astounding Stories', and changed to Astounding Science-Fiction in March 1938.The hyphen disappeared in November 1946,and the title then remained unchanged until 1960,when the 'Analog Science Fact & Fiction' was phased in between February and October. In April 1965 this was reversed to 'Analog Science Fiction & Fact' and it has remained unchanged since then, though it has undergone several stylistic and orthographic variations. Publishers Street & Smith was acquired by Samuel Newhouse, the owner of Condé Nast,in August 1959,and merged into Condé Nast at the end of 1961.Campbell finally achieved his goal of getting rid of the word 'Astounding' in the magazine's title, changing it to Analog Science Fact/Science Fiction. The British edition by this publisher, ran from August 1939 until August 1963,initially in pulp format, switching to digest from November,1953.The pulp issues began at 96pp,then dropped to 80pp with the March,1940 issue, and to 64pp in December that year. All the digest issues were 128 pages long. The price was 9d until October,1953; thereafter it was 1/6d until February 1961, and 2/6d until the end of the run.The material in the British editions was selected from the U.S. issues, most stories coming from a single U.S. number, and other stories picked from earlier or later issues to fill the magazine. The covers were usually repainted from the American originals. LTD.,1959., 3, ISBN: 9780195307610Oxford University Press | 17 August 2006Paperback | 608 pages The publication of this fully updated edition of A Dictionary of Genetics coincides with the hundredth anniversary of the introduction of the term genetics by William Bateson in 1906 at the Third International Conference on Genetics.
