It sounded the death knell for the Ottoman Empire and paved the way for a new colonial power in the region - the British. It was T.E. Lawrence, a young army officer with a brilliant military mind and unmatched knowledge of the region and the Arab people, who - alongside the charismatic Faisal I - led the Revolt. These were epic events that changed the shape of the Middle East and affected Lawrence for the rest of his life. His magnificent first-hand account of the period is now a classic of 20th century literature." oclc, Garden City Publishing Co. He traces the works of generations of reformers; engineers of a new social structure, as well as events that shaped the modernisation path. These articles especially deal with the period since the 1908 revolution, examining the process by which the new Turkey was formed. Ahmad also underlines the crises of legitimacy that characterized much of the period. Articles in two volumes are compiled thematically. First volume deals with the ideas of modernisation which spans the period of Young Turk Revolution to Kemalist Movement. That volume also elaborates various subjects such as unionist relations with minorities, the social and economic policy of the Young Turks and the political economy of Kemalism. Second volume discusses events of the period and comments from important figures such as Trotsky. This volume also contains articles on development of working-class consciousness, postage stamps that reflect ideology in the late Ottoman Empire and Ottoman perception of the capitulations. These two volumes also shed the light on problems of contemporary Turkey. Feroz Ahmads works on Second Constitutional Monarchy and Modern Turkey are well-known. He is an important historian who observes and evaluates political structure of East; from Muslim india to Turkey. in these volumes, he evaluates the problems of Turkey in the last century and discusses with Turkologists and Turkish intellectuals. These articles are written in various times and compiled in a specific context., Istanbul Bilgi University Press, 2014, Istanbul: Türkiye Is Bankasi Kültür Yayinlari, 2018. Soft cover. The story begins with the two women's journey to Turkey in search of Sano's native village in the Pontic Mountains, a remote region south of the Black Sea that had been settled by Greeks more than 2,000 years ago. In 1920, at the age of 10, Sano was the oldest of five children. She adored her beautiful mother and was favored by her grandfather, a blacksmith who was revered in their community. She felt secure in the closeness of her family, the beauty of farm life, the rituals of church and school. Ominous rumors of the persecution of Greeks by the Turkish military became a nightmarish reality when her father was conscripted. He escaped, but several months later everyone in her village was forced to leave their homes with scarcely a day's notice. The "emigration" was a death march, in which three of Sano's sisters perished. Not able to provide food for the family, Sano's parents left her with a surrogate family who treated her harshly. At the age of 15, Sano was sold into marriage to an Assyrian, three times her age, who had returned from America to find a wife. Despite the early tragedies of her young life, Sano's courage and determination to survive prevailed as she and her husband successfully raised 10 children. Her daughter has written an eloquent and powerful account of this tragic chapter of Turkish history. " 328p. illus. Reprint. Soft Cover. Finds dating to the Mycenaean period have been excavated near the city and during the classical period Nauplion served as a port for the more powerful city state of Argos. Macedonian, Roman, and then Byzantine rule were followed by the Crusaders, then the Venetians and Ottomans. The city is sprinkled with buildings, churches, statues, and fountains from these periods and the two large fortresses of Akronauplia and Palamidi testify to the city's strategic importance. All this is carefully described by Timothy Gregory's 81 page guide, Nauplion, with plans and black and white photographs, paperback.. Soft Cover. New Book from Greece., Lycabettus Press, 1980<
