Dr Buthelezi has served as Minister of Home Affairs of the Republic of South African from 1994 to 2004. He became a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of South African in April 1994 and was appointed Acting President by former President Mandela on numerous occasions. Dr Buthelezi was the founder and the President of Inkatha Freedom Party and a President of the Inkatha ye Nkululeko ye Sizwe in 1975; which later became Inkatha Freedom Party in 1990. He has worked as a Clerk at Bantu Administration, Durban between 1951 and 1952; a Clerk at Cowley and Cowley, Durban in 1952 and acted as Chief of the Buthelezi Tribe, Mahlabathini from 1953 to 1957. He is fully recognised Chief of the Buthelezi Tribe from 1957 and has served as Chief Executive Officer of The Zulu Territorial Authority at Nongoma from 1970 to 1972; Chief Executive Councillor of KwaZulu Legislative Assembly from 1972 to 1976 he also served as Chief Minister of KwaZulu from 1976 to 1994.
