In this book he tells the story of his life and, in simple, deeply reflected and profoundly wise words, he expounds the Christian faith for today. The vibrant personality of Elder Porphyrios at all times shines through his words with great transparency and charm. In his introduction to the Greek edition Bishop Irenaeus of Chania writes: "The words of blessed Elder Porphyrios are the words of a holy Father, of a man with the gift of clear sight, who was ever retiring, humble, simple and ardent and whose life was a true and authentic witness to Christ, to His truth and to His joy. Through his presence, love, prayer, counsel and guidance he supported an untold number of people in the difficult hours of illness, mourning, pain, loss of faith and death. He is a god-bearing Father of our days, a true priest and teacher who in his ascetic way fell in love with Christ and faithfully served his fellow man. Illus. by Trans. Fr. John Raffan., Denise Harvey, 2004, In english. Soft cover, 22 cm, 400 pp. This book presents the life, work and teaching of St. Gregory Palamas as they relate to his identity as a monk of the Holy Mountain. In the consciousness of the Church as a whole, St. Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, is not just a great Father of the Church and an Ecumenical Teacher, but belongs to the company of the Three Hierarchs and the three great Theologians of the Church, as "The Fourth Hierarch and Theologian". Drawing on information provided by St. Philotheos, St. Gregory's biographer, the author describes the Saints life from childhood, before he moved to the Holy Mountain. Subsequently we see the Saint as monk, priest, Abbott and Metropolitan, and it is stressed that he was a true Hagiorite, not only because he stayed on the Holy Mountain, but because he lived the life of the Holy Mountain. We learn about the Saints gifts and virtues, but also his temptations, which he regarded as a special blessing from God. The Saint's teaching is an expression of the life which he encountered on the Holy Mountain, that is to say, the hesychastic way of life which is the essence of the Orthodox tradition. The core of the Saint's teaching can be found in his dispute with the speculative philosopher Barlaam. He overturned Barlaams erroneous views and laid down the theological conditions for noetic prayer. He demonstrated that noetic prayer is found in the tradition of the Church, and is not just the prerogative of monks, but can be practised by all Christians. By setting out in theological terms the value of fasting, vigil, tears and compunction, and also analysing the importance of the senses during the practice of noetic prayer, he teaches us that the body cannot be overlooked in mans effort to be purified. In fact, he explains that the grace of God acts in the soul and from there is carried over into the body as well.==========================================================, Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias), 2000, Soft cover, 15X22 cm, 452 pp. In this book, seventeen texts are published which make clear how indispensable for the knowledge of God is the hesychastic and neptic Tradition of the Church, as presented in the writings and teaching of the holy Fathers. Heyschia, as a method and means for healing mans soul, is the way along which every Christian must inevitably pass to reach communion with God. The knowledge of God, in other words theology, is the fruit of hesychia, and constitutes mans salvation. The book is dedicated by the author to three recent Elders who "received, preserved and handed on the Sacred Tradition entrusted to them", Father Paisios the Hagiorite, Father Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia and Father Sophrony the Hesychast, who lived the Mystery of the Cross and Resurrection of Christ, and suffered, learnt and taught. After the author's preface, instead of an introduction, excerpts are quoted from the theology of Father John Romanides, referring to prayer and Orthodox theology. // A greek edition also available., Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias) 2007, Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias) 2005. Brand new. in english. Soft cover, 22 cm, 240 pp.The author examines what the Church is and what the real dimensions of the mind of the Church are. At the beginning of the book the chapters "Origin and Revelation of the Church" and "Definition and Characteristics of the Church" emphasise that the Church is not a human organisation but a Divine-Human Organism. It is the Body of Christ and a "communion of deification". The source of the Church is God Himself. The characteristics of the Church (One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic) are analysed, as well as the aim of the Church, which is mans deification and salvation. An explanation is given of who the real members of the Church are. In the chapter on "Orthodoxy according to the Holy Fathers" it is made clear that Orthodoxy is the true faith and the real Church, because only within the Church is the salvation of man made sure. The unity between the Church, Orthodoxy and the divine Eucharist is underlined, since the holy Fathers stress that Orthodoxy is the true faith of the Church and the divine Eucharist is the true action of the Church. The chapter entitled "The Church and the Divine Eucharist according to St. Maximos the Confessor" looks in detail at the teaching of St. Maximos on the Church and the Divine Eucharist in a work of his called "Mystagogy". The divine Eucharist points to the whole work of the divine Economy and signifies the souls journey to acquiring true knowledge. Within the Holy Temple (the Church building) and the divine Eucharist Christians have the living experience of the unity of the Church. Reading the chapter on "The Mind of the Orthodox Church" makes us aware that this way of thinking is inspired by the Holy Spirit and is linked with the regenerated life which is experienced in the heart. Reference is made to the characteristics of the Orthodox ekklesiastical mind as recorded by St. Paul in his Epistles. The chapter on "The Catholic Way of Life" can be seen as especially significant. It points out that a catholic man is one who recognises the truth (Orthodox) and lives the truth (righteous). It examines the fact that there are no splits within the Church, nor are there different categories of people, but one catholic way of life which can be experienced by all the Churchs members, for each person is created by God in His image and likeness. In the chapter "Orthodoxy and Legalism" the Orthodox viewpoint is set out: the Church accepts neither antinomianism nor legalism in the spiritual life. Our relationship with God is personal, ekklesiastical, and not juridical. Sin is regarded as an illness of the soul and is not placed in a legal framework. The difference between Papism and Orthodoxy is made clear, because in the Latin Church more legalism in experienced in both theology and life, whereas in the Orthodox Church we keep the law with the aim of living the spirit of the law, because the law is not an end in itself but a necessary means to mans healing. It is worth paying particular attention to the chapter on "Secularism in the Church, Theology and Pastoral Care", which stresses that when the Church loses its main objective, to cure its members, it becomes secular. The secularisation of the members of the Church is regarded as the gravest danger in our time. Many people today see the Church as a religious or social organisation, or as an ideological or even magic place, and as a result they remain unhealed. The Church is the spiritual hospital which heals man and leads him to deification, which is the fundamental purpose for which he was created. At the end of the book we can study the chapter on the "Synodikon of Orthodoxy". This is a concise sacred text which sums up the Orthodox teaching of the Church. The "Synodikon of Orthodoxy" expresses the teaching of Orthodox faith and life, and the ethos and mind of the Church, which are linked to, and in harmony with, the decisions of the Fathers of the Church as expressed with conciliar authority. Reference is made to the distinguishing marks which characterise the Ecumenical Councils and differentiate them from Local Councils., Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias), 2005, Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias), 2006. Brand new. Soft cover, 23.5 cm, 390 pp. Translated in english by Esther Williams. The book "Orthodox Psychotherapy" (The Science of the Fathers) sets out the teaching of the holy Fathers of the Church on curing the soul. It has been increasingly established in recent years that Orthodoxy is a therapeutic science. In order for a person to find the health of his soul and really to know God and himself, he must first of all find the place of his heart. "Finding and curing the heart is essentially finding salvation., Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias), 2006, Chrysostom Press. Fine. 1997. Reprint. Paperback. 0963518356 . 0.9 x 8.9 x 6 Inches; 328 pages; This classic Orthodox commentary of the New Testament was written in about the year 1100 A.D. by a brilliant and saintly Byzantince churchman. His commentary has remained a primary text of New Testament interpretation throughout the Orthodox world of Greece, Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania. Blessed Theophylact distills the teaching of the earlier Church Fathers, especially St. John Chrysostom, in language that is profound, powerful, and direct. Translated from the original Greek text. ., Chrysostom Press, 1997, Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias) 2008. Brand new. Soft cover, 22 cm, 396 pp. This book presents the basic theological events relating to Christ the Lord, and offers interpretative keys to enable us to understand the central Christological points of the Lords feasts. It is stressed that Christology has an important place in Orthodox teaching. The book is divided in two sections. In the first are published presentations which were given at a Seminar of the Holy Archdiocese of Athens in the year 1994-1995, and refer to the feasts of the Lord which make up the "Twelve Feasts", as the Church calls them. The second part includes Christological texts which were published in various periodicals and are connected with the Lords Feasts. The events relating to the Lord cannot be divided up, nor can they be evaluated. They are experienced in each Divine Liturgy and remind us of the condescension and self-emptying of Christ, Who became for us the Cause of salvation. However, the Church determined that these events should be celebrated separately, thus sanctifying the year and offering us the possibility of enjoying and experiencing the milestones of the divine Economy in our own personal lives. Each Feast is examined individually, and the reader will observe that the analysis given is comprehensive, thorough, and based on the teaching of the holy Fathers., Hiera Mone Genethliou tes Theotokou (Pelagias) 2008, Wipf & Stock Publishers, October 2004. Paper Back Paper Back. New. The assumption that heresy was a distortion, a diminution of an original orthodox deposit of faith was fundamental to apologetic works of early Christian writers such as Hegesippus, Tertullian, Irenaeus, Hippolytus and others, defining the categories for centuries thereafter. In the wake of modern critical suspicions, however, came Walter Bauer's 1934 Orthodoxy and Heresy in Earliest Christianity, which reset the defaults concerning those two categories. Bauer famously argued that orthodoxy and heresy were simply competing versions of Christian teaching, neither having priority, and that what we now know as orthodoxy only emerged triumphant at the end of the second century. The labels then became set by the victors. Twenty years later in the Bampton Lectures of 1954, H.E.W. Turner set forth the first significant critical response to Bauer's thesis, with a highly nuanced argument that Bauer's analysis was not only historically deficient, but that it lacked any attention to theological analysis. Orthodoxy triumphed because its theology was defined by Scripture and not by extraneous elements imposed on Scripture; and it was consistent with Tradition and Reason by its rule of faith and a creed that manifested the experience of the Church, unselfconsciously developing a theology that articulated her inner life (''The Church lived Trinitarianly before she evolved a satisfactory doctrine of the Trinity, while her devotion to Christ as God precede by a still longer time span the achievement of a theologia Christi''). As Turner himself concludes, ''the most important element in the evolution of Christian orthodoxy is... kind of Christian common sense exercised at all its levels within the Christian Church, which is merely another name for the guidance of the Holy Spirit leading the Church into all truth and dividing to every man severally as He wills.'' And just in passing, how refreshing to read these most erudite lectures (delivered only fifty years ago?) that refer to Jesus as ''our Lord,'' are innocent of ''B.C.E.'' and ''C.E.,'' and conclude with a doxology. 508 pp., Wipf & Stock Publishers, Business Printing House Pub. Soft cover, 21 cm, 268 pp.Elder Porphyrios, a Greek monk and priest who died in 1991, stands in the long tradition of charismatic spiritual guides in the Eastern Church which continues from the apostolic age down to figures such as Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Staretz Silouan in modern times. In this book he tells the story of his life and, in simple, deeply reflected and profoundly wise words, he expounds the Christian faith for today. This book was compiled after his death from an archive of notes and recordings of his reminiscences, conversations and words of guidance, and was first published in Greek in 2003. His teaching is deeply impregnated with the ethos and theology of the Orthodox Church and is dominated by the person and image of Christ our Saviour.CONTENTS:PART ONE: THE LIFE OF ELDER PORPHYRIOS The Path to the Holy Mountain 1 The Holy Mountain - Kavsokalyvia 10 Evia 37The Polyclinic Hospital in Athens 49 Saint Nicholas at Kallisia 70The Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration at Milesi 75 Kavsokalyvia - 1991 82PART TWO: THE WISDOM OF ELDER PORPHYRIOS On the Church 87 On Divine Eros 96 On Prayer 113 On Spiritual Struggle 134 On the Monastic Life 158 On the Mystery of Repentance 173 On Love for One's Neighbour 180 On Divine Providence 190 On the Upbringing of Children 195 On Dispositions of the Heart 212 On Creation 218 On Illness 224 On the Gift of Clear Sight 232APPENDIX:Saint John the Hut-dweller 249 The Skete of Kavsokalyvia 250 Map of Evia and Attiki 252 Map of Mount Athos 253====================================================, Denise Harvey, 2005, Limni,Evvia,Greece: Denise Harvey, 2004. (New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) Elder Porphyrios, a Greek monk and priest who died in 1991, stands in the long tradition of charismatic spiritual guides in the Eastern Church which continues from the apostolic age down to figures such as Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Staretz Silouan in modern times. In this book he tells the story of his life and, in simple, deeply relfected and profoundly wise words, he expounds the Christian faith for today. This book was compiled after his death from an archive of notes and recordings of his reminiscences, conversations and words of guidance, and was first published in Greek in 2003. The vibrant personality of Elder Porphyrios at all times shines through his words with great transparency and charm. In his introduction to the Greek edition Bishop Irenaeus of Chania writes: 'The words of blessed Elder Porphyrios are the words of a holy Father, of a man with the gift of clear sight, who was ever retiring, humble, simple and ardent and whose life was a true and authentic witness to Christ, to His truth and to His joy. Through his presence, love, prayer, counsel and guidance he supported an untold number of people in the diffcult hours of illness, mourning, pain, loss of faith and death.
