London England: SCM Press Ltd. Paperback. Very slight shelf wear to edge of cover. The material contained in this book grew largely our of extraordinary four day gathering held in Huddersfield at the beginning of January 1973. The event was sponsored by the Student Christian Movement in response to a widespread feeling among radical Christians that a re-examination of our faith - in the context of our more usually articulated political radicalism - was long overdue. The response to the event was an unusual one in that it was not primarily an intellectual response; the re-examination required was not so much a cerebral critique of theology or politics but a flesh and blood discovery of spiritual roots. It has proved impossible adequately to reflect in the form of this book the substance of the actual event itself. The experiences that could not have been planned and cannot be properly communicated were precisely those features that made the occasion extraordinary. Books are designed to communicate other (but not more important) aspects of our existence and we are therefore only able to pass on here some of what is available and possible to print. This we have collected into three sections. Firstly, the transcripts of the contributions of Alistair Kee, Dan Berrigan, Colin Winter and Jim Forest; secondly, something of the response at the tieme to the questions raised; and thirdly, reflections on the subject and the implications for any conceivable future. 120 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . But his daughter, Fina, is a bit of a black sheep. A law school dropout, her father keeps her in the fold as the firm's private investigator, working alongside her brothers. Juggling her family of high-powered (and highly dysfunctional) attorneys, the cops and Boston's criminal element is usually something Fina does without breaking a sweat. But when her sister-in-law disappears, she's caught up in a case unlike any she's encountered before. Carl wants things resolved without police interference, but the deeper Fina digs, the more impossible that seems. The Ludlows close ranks, and her brother Rand and his unruly teenage daughter Haley grow mysteriously distant from the family. As Fina unearths more dirt, the demands of family loyalty intensify. "A year ago, Travis McKinley, an unknown golfing amateur, shocked the world by winning the PGA Senior Open at Pebble Beach. Now he's famous, he makes his living playing the game he loves, and everything should be perfect. Still Travis can't shake the feeling that he's a fraud, an imposter who doesn't deserve his success--and after a series of disappointments and, to be honest, personal screw-ups, he might just prove himself right. A shot at redemption arrives in an unexpected form: a teenage outcast with troubles of his own--and a natural golf swing. As this unlikely duo sets out to achieve the impossible on the world's most revered golf course, Travis is about to learn that sometimes the greatest miracles of all take place when no one is watching." Love d and loathed in equal measure, they nonetheless hold a unique an d essential place in the country's garden heritage. Award-winning photographer and author Vivian Russell presents an intimate port rait of these often shy garden dwellers, photographing and writin g about ten gardens in which they are to be found. This book cele brates the various ways people have used them in their gardens, c reating Lilliputian worlds of great charm and originality. Edito rial Reviews From Publishers Weekly A sense of the ridiculous .. . is one of life's best levellers, writes writer and photographer Russell (Monet's Garden, etc.), and there are few things more ri diculous and strangely entertaining than garden gnomes. Russell c ombines an eye for the absurd with a genuine appreciation for the se jovial figurines, photographing them in a wide variety of posi tions and outrageous situations. There is an all-gnome chess set, a gnome fishing on the side of the road and even a gnome with a laptop and a cell phone. The diversity of painted facial expressi ons is remarkable. Each statuette possesses a unique personality, though all exude a level of joy. As Russell writes, gnomes are o ptimists, they breathe contentment, and it is impossible to look at these photographs without smiling. In her travels, Russell has met some extreme gnome fans, such as an elderly man who dresses like a gnome twice a week. Although readers will probably not rea ch the same level of obsession, they will undoubtedly enjoy flipp ing through these delightful, vibrant photos and reading Russell' s fond musings on these adorable garden accessories.
