Before he could complete the writing, however, Salutati's commitment to the task of orienting nascent Italian humanism toward Christian goals became so impelling that it forced him to redefine the nature of the choices at the crossroads and to reassess the capacity of the viator to choose the proper way. When that occurred, the value of humanistic studies themselves came into question. A major objective of the follow-ing study is to describe the evolution of this Christian conception of the human predicament in Salutati's thought and its effects on his humanism. Part I.
