Particularly interesting is the fairly lengthy consideration of Anita Berber, dancer, morphine addict, and flamboyant bisexual, whose "naked dances" scandalized Berlin and Vienna in the 1920s. Hauntingly remindful of Nijinsky, Berber actually essayed outre realms of public sexuality at which Madonna only limply paws. The three photos of Berber and her paramour, Sebastian Droste, are nearly reason enough to acquire this satisfying and impressive popular cultural history<

The story begins in the 1860s -- in the music halls of London and the cabarets of Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, where Lydia Thompson, La Goulue, and Anita Berber perfect the art of titillation through dance. We move to New York's Ziegfeld Follies (and the beginnings of modern striptease) when Lillian Lorraine shoots to megastardom, and then to Gypsy Rose Lee's Hollywood Burlesque. It moves on to Scandinavian nightclubs in the 1960s, London strip joints in the 1970s, and finally to contemporary Eastern Europe's booming underground sex industry.
