Nicolas Slonimsky: The First Hundred Years celebrates America's leading musicologist, now approaching his centennial year. Still active at one hundred, Slonimsky is probably best known for his scholarly and voluminous writing, which has been indispensable to musicians worldwide. A tribute to his brilliant career as conductor, composer, teacher, and writer, The First Hundred Years reveals Slonimsky at his literary best. Slonimsky born April 27, 1894, in St. Petersburg, Russia, took his first piano lesson in 1900 and went on to study orchestration at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1937, after holding a number of musical jobs, and fourteen years after coming to America, Slonimsky published his first book, Music Since 1900. Since then, he has become the world's leading musical lexicographer, editing Baker's for over five decades. For The First Hundred Years the editors have gathered Slonimsky masterpieces including excerpts from his autobiographies, histories, biographies, musical concepts, and translations. The First Hundred Years is the only collection of Slonimsky's writings drawing together selections from Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, Music Since 1900 Lexicon of Musical Invective, Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, and his autobiographical work, Perfect Pitch., Schirmer Books, 1994, 3, Cengage Gale. British music critic Lebrecht is well known to music lovers for his entertaining, gossipy book Discord. The same droll, opinionated, and eminently quotable author makes a triumphant return with this encyclopedia on the personalities and ideas of this century's music. As with Nicolas Slonimsky's Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, the stamp of an idiosyncratic, unabashedly partial mind can be found in every entry. Lebrecht professes a pluralistic, nonideological approach: He holds no allegiances, save to his own instincts and good judgment. The results are mixed; for the most part, readers will be greatly impressed by the insightfulness of his comments and the sheer scope of the project., Simon & Schuster, 1993, 4.5, Howard Baker, London, first edition, 1970. Cloth, 8vo, 23 cm,. 361 pp. This work is mainly intended to cover the writers of stories which appeared in boys' papers up to about 1950, as after that date most boys' papers mainly consisted of picture stories. Some writers of boys' books are, however, included where it is felt that they should be inserted for general interest. It contains the names of well over two thousand authors and editors, together with biographical details of many of them, including the pen-names they used and the papers and publishers to which they contributed. One can tell at a glance what one's favourite author wrote, and where. Whilst this biography does not claim to list every single boys' author who ever wrote, it does claim to list every single Amalgamated Press writer, plus many hundreds of principal writers for other papers and publishers.
