Samya CONDITION: NEW -- BINDING: Hardcover ~ Condition: NEW ~ Reflecting on the pressing moral crisis of democracy and secularism, this book suggests that the focus should be on identity, which will help us to tackle the divisive, often violent, strands of our society.Who are we? And who are the Others? How are these vital questions worked out? Inviting the reader to get involved, this book weaves together scholarly analysis and the everyday experiences of activities.Gyandendra Pandey suggests that identity and fear of the Others are linked to our failure to come to terms with the searing, painful experiences of Partition. Ratnabali Chatterjee looks at the myths prevalent in medieval history textbooks that have a tenacious hold on students despite historical evidence to the contrary. Jasodhara Bagchi analyses the late nineteenth-century debate on the nation and identity through a 'reading against the grain' of Tagore's Gora.Examining the controversy over a Uniform Civil Code, Flavia Agnes looks at what Hindu women have and lost under the Hindu Code Bill, which is often projected as an advanced measure could be extended to other communities. Three women's groups from Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad discuss the impact of communalism on gender issues, emphasizing once again the links between the concepts of 'the nation' and 'identity'. The experience of the Other is discussed by Nandita Haksar in the highly complex societies of the North-East, where the Indian state if bent on imposing its version of nationhood. It is also carefully considered by Gautam Navlakha in the context of Kashmir, where the state is enforcing Indian identity. An unusual aspect of the book is that of orality: these essays were first presented in discussions organized by Majlis, Bombay, and the comments of many participants have been included to give us further insight on these issues. The editors have provided a valuable forum for the ordinary concerned citizen who aspires after a vision of a more just society.206 pages ~ Isbn: 8185604096 ~ language: English ~ Year: 1996 ~ Binding: Hardcover ~ Contents ISBN: 8185604096~ language: English ~ Year: 1996 ~ Binding: Hardcover ~ Contents, Samya<
