Trams originated in New York in 1832 when two horse-drawn single-deck cars reached 'breath-taking speeds on flat iron strips that served as rails'.Regular electric tram services first came to the West and South West of England at Bristol in 1895.They proved immediately popular and within a few years many other towns followed with their own systems bringing cheap travel to many who previously could not afford it. Throughout their existence electric trams proved highly successful but they were not to last.By the late 1920's and early 1930's many had outlived their usefulness.Road transport was on the increase and the rival motor bus was becoming more reliable A comprehensive guide to the many passenger tramway systems in the area.Leslie Oppitz explains their history, the reasons for their construction and their closure. His account includes the narrow-gauge tramway at Seaton as well as the several cliff railways in the region. Also considered are the plans for the various Rapid Transit systems of tomorrow. The book has its lighter moments - such as the child who travelled by tram to a Weston-Super- Mare hospital with a chamber pot stuck on his head or the cliff railway operator who nearly had to use his first-aid skills as a mid-wife! Modern photographs accompany those taken when the tramways were busy throughout the many towns. The majority are published here for the first time in book form. His excellently written and researched book will be enjoyed both as tramway history and as a means by which the reader can explore for themselves some of the relics that have survived from the tramway age. Field boundaries are among the most enigmatic of all landscape features.Their sheer variety, ranging from the drystone walls of northern England and Wales to the huge hedgebanks of Devon and the reed- fringed dykes of eastern England, reflects the complex history of human interaction with the environment. The different types of boundary can tell us much about the history and geology of the area,as well as serving as potent symbols of ownership, agriculturaldevelopment and changing economic fortunes. They can also constitute valuable habitat for wildlife, never more so thanwhen they survive in what are often intensively managed agro-landscapes. After decades of wilful destruction and neglect, the futurelooks brighter for field boundaries.Real efforts are now being made to retain and replenish many of those that are left, and the skills required to maintain them are undergoing something of a revival. The National Trust cares for a wide range of hedges, walls and other boundary features, scattered across England,Wales and Northern Ireland, and is actively involved in both their preservationand the promotion of traditional hedging and walling techniques. At a time when things local and familiar are more activelyappreciated,'Hedges and Walls' provides a revealing and authoritative account of the subject of field boundaries. Dr. Tom Williamson considers the different types and associated features, tracing their origins, geographical distribution and history, and also highlighting their immense cultural and ecological significance. The book is fully illustrated with contemporary and historical photographs,as well as specially commissioned wildlife watercolours by artist Dan Cole. 'Hedges and Walls' is the first title in the new National Trust series Living Landscapes. Each book will explore the social and natural history of a different type of landscapeor habitat. All beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned artwork and a range of stunning contemporary photographs and historical material. The series will appeal to all those with an interest in social history, wildlife and the environment.See website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/bookshop. China's transformation over the past three decades has touched every corner of Chinese society and had an enormous global economic impact. Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, in his Foreword to this book, calls China's accomplishments "unprecedented in human history". Thirty years on is the perfect occasion to look back along the road to reform to recall the struggles and the accomplishments of the era. Picturing Reform: China's 30 Years, is a unique photographic essay, an eye-witness account of the Chinese experience of reform and opening to the outside world.l This book features 300 striking photographs by Chinese photographers, each capturing a moment about the era. Picturing Reform covers the decades from 1978 to 2008 in three sections, and the photographs are accompanied by descriptions, as well as introductions (in Chinese with English adaptations) to the larger social, political and economic events surrounding them. The pictures take the viewer on a journey - from daily life in the Chinese countryside, to the meeting rooms of the inner circle of leadership at Zhongnanhai; from the wrenching aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, through the budding experiments with market reform, and rapid development, to the flourishing, urbanizing, globalizing China of 2008. The collection, assembled by the China Photographers Association (and sponsored by Boyuan Foundation), includes photographs never before seen outside of China, revealing accomplished photojournalism and remarkable talent. The advantage of viewing history through the camera's eye, the photographers believe, is the way that film images can convey "truth, symbolism and portent". The images - by turns beautiful, surreal, poignant and powerful - are a visual tribute to the strength, resilience, and innovative capacity of the Chinese people, and a collective portrait of the role of humanity in historical change.
