He received a bachelor's degree cum laude at Union College and a masters degree at Columbia University, both in history. He has published many books dealing with modern military technology, and especially Soviet and CIS tanks and armored warfare. He is a senior analyst at the Teal Group. First seen during the American Civil War and later appearing in the Franco-Prussian War and the Anglo-Boer Wars, the armored train came to prominence on the Eastern Front during World War I. It was also deployed during the Russian Civil War and the technology traveled east into the Chinese Civil War, and the subsequent war with Japan. It saw service on the Russian Front in World War II, but was increasingly sidelined by its vulnerability to air attack. Steven J. Zaloga examines the origins and development of the armored train focusing equally on the technical detail and on the fascinating story of how armored trains were actually used in combat. This title will appeal to armor, military history and railroad enthusiasts alike., Osprey Publishing Ltd, 2008, 3<

Osprey Pub Co, 2008. New book, 48 pages, NVG140. First seen during the American Civil War and later appearing in the Franco-Prussian War and the Boer Wars, the military use of the armoured train only came to the fore during World War I, reigning supreme on the Eastern Front. Deployed widely during Russian Civil War the technology spilt over into the Chinese Civil War, and the subsequent war with Japan, the armoured train has played a major role in conflicts during the 20th century, being used during World War II and surviving to the present day -although more as a technological curiosity than a significant weapon. Steven J Zaloga examines the origins and technical development of armoured trains. But rather than provide an encyclopaedic treatment of the many trains, it instead focuses on the more important and fascinating issue of how armoured trains were actually used in combat.. Soft Cover.
