The original book of twenty chapters, was written in pencil in twenty school exercise books in 1921, probably to help exorcise the horrendous experiences he had witnessed during his three years at war from mid-1916 until his repatriation home in m id-1919. Lynch had been wounded three times, once seriously and s pent over six months in hospital in England. The author, an American national moved to France in 1892 and worked as a translator and as foreign correspondent for the Boston Journal for whom she had worked previously as a journalist. As suggested by the title her home overlooked the Marne and the book provides a moving account of the first few months of WWI. After the Christmas truce of 1914 he was wounded and invalided home. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Territorial Regiment, then to the Machine-Gun Corps, he served at Ypres and Passchaendale, subsequently being promoted to Captain. Born in 1861 in French Sudan, imported to Paris as a two year old calf, then later sold to the London Zoo at Regent's Park, Jumbo the elephant delighted countless children (including Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt) with rides and treats gently taken from outstretched hands. Each night, after the children and their families had gone home, he was mistreated in an attempt to keep him docile. By the time he reached sexual maturity, the abused and isolated animal had become dangerously unstable. He was sold to showman P.T.
