On 17 December 2010, Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian fruit seller, set himself on fire out of pure despair over his socio-economic situation and continued harassment by the Tunisian police. He thereby not only triggered a major popular uprising that spread across his country demanding employment, freedom and dignity, but also a movement that spread to the whole Arab region and became known as the ‘Arab Spring’, sparking great hopes, but also looming instability. Almost exactly five years later, on 10 December 2015, the representatives of four major Tunisian civil society organisations, better known as the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, dedicated the Nobel Peace Prize they had just been awarded to the very people of Tunisia that took to the streets, to its youth, its women, its political actors and civil society, but also its security forces for their courage combined with moderation. How did the small country of Tunisia manage its democratic transition within such a short period? And what implication has this had for its foreign policy and its role in international politics?

This book shows that Tunisia has not only fundamentally developed at the domestic level, but also on the level of external relations since 2011. New and old alliances, a broadened map of relations and new activism of both civil society and of Tunisia in international organisations certify that Tunisia has the potential to play an increasingly important role on the regional map.
