Deregulation of the supply industry worlwide, and the resulting competition, is forcing utilities to operate their facilities at ever higher efficiency, driving this trend. During the last decade, a number of control devices under the term flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) technology have been proposed and implemented. This book provides a comprehensive guide to FACTS, covering all the major aspects in research and development of FACTS technologies. Various real-world applications are also included to demonstrate the issues and benefits of applying FACTS. Written by international experts in the field from both industry and academia, this book will be a useful reference for professional engineers involved in the operation and control of modern power systems. The author tells of his experiences in the ghetto and camps and how he set out, after the war, in search of his brothers, eventually finding them in Italy with the Polish Army. Having returned to the United States, Bernard Offen was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Korean War. After the war, he founded his own business and built a family, both helping to restore a sense of normality to his life. This was the start of his own unique process of healing that led, ultimately, to his retirement and decision to dedicate his life to educating audiences around the world about his experiences during the Holocaust. Bernard Offen's story recounts his one-man journey across America, Europe, Israel, and back to his native Poland, and his development as a filmmaker, educator, and healer. My Hometown Concentration Camp will touch readers through the strength of the author's self-determination to attempt to confront and conquer the traumatic experiences he witnessed as a young man.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/a7aa0736/my-hometown-concentration-camp-bernard-offen-9780853036364.jpg|9780853036364|My Hometown Concentration Camp : Paperback : Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd : 9780853036364 : 01 Sep 2007 : My Hometown Concentration Camp tells the story of the young Bernard Offen's endurance and survival of the KrakÃ?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?Â?Ã?³w Ghetto and ...|new|1|1|6|13.5|0|GBP|Bernard Offen|Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd|01 Sep 2007|Autobiography: historical, political & military 9780852725412|Ancient Frontiers|8.00|https://wordery.com/ancient-frontiers-9780852725412|This book describes the dramatic landscape around Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland National Park. For most commentators, 'new war' is 'mindless' mass action. It has become a behavioural problem. Like a disease, the risk of infection must be contained. This book takes a different approach. Anthropologists who have lived with and through the wars they describe here reflect a paradoxical assumption that to understand war we must deny it a special status. Rather than quarantine warand leave it to security specialists they attempt to grasp its character as but one among many phases or aspects of social reality, organised by social agents, made through social action. All war is long-term struggle organised for political ends, and neither the means nor the ends can be understood without reference to a specific social context.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/f0541a10/no-peace-no-war-an-anthropology-of-contemporary-armed-conflicts-paul-richards-9780852559352.jpg|9780852559352|No Peace, No War - An Anthropology of Contemporary Armed Conflicts : Paperback : James Currey : 9780852559352 : 09 Nov 2004 : The proliferation of 'new wars' since the end of the Cold War has forced scholars to re-open the debate about 'what is war?'|new|1|1|1|17.99|0|GBP|Paul Richards|James Currey|09 Nov 2004|Armed conflict 9780852559529|Colonial Lessons - Africans` Education in Southern Rhodesia, 1918-1940|19.99|https://wordery.com/colonial-lessons-africans-education-in-southern-rhodesia-1918-1940-carol-l-summers-9780852559529|This work shows how mission-educated Africans negotiated new identities for themselves and their communities within the confines of segregation. Rabbi Rapoport combines an unswerving commitment to Jewish Law, teachings and values with a balanced, understanding perspective that has, arguably, been lacking among many in the Orthodox Jewish establishment. This work represents a milestone in understanding an issue at the heart of a great deal of debate, not to mention prejudice and discrimination. It will undoubtedly be a vehicle for future discussion and will serve as a brick in the wall of an increasingly harmonious World Jewish Community. The book combines clearly written prose for instant and easy access with exhaustive endnotes for all those who wish to explore the issue further. Whether they were temporary contractor's lines or more permanent installations, these meandering, often poorly maintained railways have a special fascination. This book deals in turn with the locomotives, the rolling stock and the track, describing their development. It pays tribute to the inventors of an earlier age and to the more recent groups of enthusiasts who have been keeping the 'narrow' tradition alive. About the author Ian Dean was appointed founder Director of the Amberley Working Museum, Sussex in 1979. Developing this new open-air museum involved the incorporation of a major collection of narrow-gauge equipment. In 1989 he became Managing Director of the Mid Hants Railway, later a freelance consultant. The story of this large, middle-class Jewish family is also the story of a deeply-rooted Jewish community and its considerable cultural and material achievements, until disaster struck and it was wiped off the face of the earth. At the beginning of the century, Krakow was under Austrian rule. The mother of the family died, leaving a husband and eight children. A different destiny awaited each of the them, each story reflecting the options which faced Polish Jews at that time. With the outbreak of the First World War, the eldest son joined the army and was sent to the Italian front. He returned a broken man, and died shortly afterwards. The second son married happily, became a successful lumber merchant and a paterfamilias. He veered between Jewish and European culture and regarded Poland as his homeland. One of the sisters, a natural rebel, fell in love with a Polish non-Jew. When he abandoned her, she became a Zionist and immigrated to Eretz Israel. Her older sister was happily married to an old-style religious Jew. Another sister married an assimilated Jew and was uncertain as to her national identity, while the fourth fell in love with a Communist. Their prosperous brother had three children - two daughters and a son - who enjoyed life in independent Poland between the wars. When the Germans invaded Poland, the family missed the last train out and with it the chance to be saved. It is an island of manageable size with deep-sea loughs cutting far inland, spectacular inland loughs surrounded by mountains and majestic rivers connected by man-made canals. In a boat of suitable dimensions you can cross the country from Dublin on the soft east coast to Limerick and the Atlantic, or from Waterford in the southeast to Belleek in the northwest, without ever setting to sea. These unrivalled waterways also offer superb walking and cycling access, and the gentle pace of these modes of travel really allows you to get to know Ireland and her people. Jane Cumberlidge has compiled this volume to provide essential information on all the rivers and waterways of the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. She uses the same successful pattern familiar to users of her Inland Waterways of Great Britain to describe each waterway. There are interesting general sections that describe the geography and history of the country, followed by details of locks, bridges, regulations and notes on dimensions. The distance tables are supported by fully illustrated two-colour maps and photographs. Alongside many of the principle waterways you can sample fine food and wines in good restaurants, cafes and pubs, and this book includes a few personal recommendations as a gastronomic starting point for visitors new to the area. The only title to comprehensively cover the inland waterways of Ireland in a single volume. They are the home for a number of shrines, and have become a scene of symbolic, ideological, political and armed conflict between the Shona, Ndebele and Europeans for more than 100 years. Many questions in Matopos history are crucial to the history of Matabeleland as a whole, and some central to the history of Zimbabwe: the right relationship of men and women to the land; the nature of culture; the dynamics of ethnicity; the roots of dissidence and violence; and the historical bases of underdevelopment. Jacqueline Jones' new guide provides detailed coverage for anyone interested in this under-rated waterway network. It is a fascinating cruising area in it's own right, with contrasting canals and navigable rivers that thread their way across both the lowlands of Flanders and the massif of the Ardennes. The Belgian waterways link Northern France with the Netherlands and Germany and this work will be essential for boats crossing borders. Jacqueline Jones's new waterway-by-waterway guide provides all the essential information for navigation, as well as details about things to do and places to see in Belgium's historic cities. Fully illustrated with clear maps and the author's photography, this book is a must for anyone cruising Belgium or en-route to the French or Dutch canals. It will undoubtedly be a vehicle for future discussion and will serve as a brick in the wall of an increasingly harmonious World Jewish Community. The book combines clearly written prose for instant and easy access with exhaustive endnotes for all those who wish to explore the issue further. Judaism and Homosexuality is the first word on Orthodox attitudes to homosexuality, and will be a 'must have' on the desk of all professionals who find themselves in positions of guidance with the Jewish community.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/ea8418af/judaism-and-homosexuality-rabbi-chaim-rapoport-9780853035015.jpg|9780853035015|Judaism and Homosexuality : Hardback : Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd : 9780853035015 : 01 Feb 2003 : In light of modern changes in attitude regarding homosexuality, and recent controversy surrounding Government legislation, Orthodox Rabbi Chaim Rapopor ...|new|1|1|6|40|0|GBP|Rabbi Chaim Rapoport|Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd|01 Feb 2003|Jewish studies 9780852726068|Be<

Most of the family perished in the Holocaust.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/f5833605/my-own-vineyard-miriam-akavia-9780853035190.jpg|9780853035190|My Own Vineyard : Paperback : Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd : 9780853035190 : 17 Oct 2006 : This rich novel, in the best tradition of family sagas, tells the story of three generations of a Jewish family in Krakow from the beginning of the twentieth ce ...|new|1|1|12|16.95|0|GBP|Miriam Akavia|Vallentine Mitchell & Co Ltd|17 Oct 2006|Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945) books 9780852725412|Ancient Frontiers|8.00|https://wordery.com/ancient-frontiers-9780852725412|This book describes the dramatic landscape around Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland National Park. In praise of 'Inland Waterways of Ireland': This is the first comprehensive guide and directory to the navigable and not-so-navigable waterways of Ireland. The Belgian waterways link Northern France with the Netherlands and Germany and this work will be essential for boats crossing borders. Jacqueline Jones's new waterway-by-waterway guide provides all the essential information for navigation, as well as details about things to do and places to see in Belgium's historic cities.
