A mammoth volume. 111 items are featured and voluminously annotated. Index. Fabulous illustrations. In 1685 Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had given religious freedom to the French protestants, or Huguenots. What had been a steady stream of refugees became a flood, creating a tremendous diaspora of talent across northern Europe. Many of the Huguenots were skilled artists, like silversmiths, and their influence on English silver of the period has long been recognized. In this book, Christopher Hartop re-assesses the Huguenot contribution to silver made in England and suggests that the Huguenots were just one - albeit the most significant - of several groups of foreign workers who were responsible for the great flowering of style and technique in English silver between 1680 and 1760. The book also examines the radical changes in the way in which people sat down to eat which took place during the early Georgian period, and how silversmiths responded to the demand for innovative types of silverware this created. The new fashion for coffee and tea saw the introduction of a wealth of new forms of domestic silver. Separate sections deal with silver for eating, drinking, coffee and tea, lighting, and salvers. Silver made for display is also examined. Introductory chapters place the silver of the period in the social and historical context of the times., Thomas Heneage, 1996, 3, Sydney: HarperCollins Publishers, 2014. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 'Written by leading historian Melanie Oppenheimer, and fully illustrated with a wealth of photographs and other records from the archives of Australian Red Cross Society, this riveting history marks 100 years of Red Cross in Australia. this is the story of everyday Australians. It is a history of people helping people across 'generations, united by a common passion and commitment to humanitarian action'. Born at the outbreak of World War I, Australian Red Cross celebrates its centenary in August 2014, making it one of the oldest and most respected voluntary organisations in Australia. With the help of volunteers across Australia, Red Cross played a critical role in supporting the men fighting overseas and the families at home during WWI and its aftermath, and later during WWII. Post-WWII it continued to build on this foundation, developing humanitarian services both nationally and internationally. this celebratory book focuses not only on the past but also on the present and future of Australian Red Cross, showing how the organisation has changed and developed over the last hundred years, from an organisation formed in war to one dealing with the varied demands of the twenty-first century - from social welfare to responding to disasters within Australia such as Cyclone tracy, the Victorian bushfires and Queensland floods, as well as international crises such as the 2004 tsunami. Fully illustrated with a wealth of photographs and other material from the archives of Australian Red Cross, this is an important record of an Australian icon.
