Lev Shestov was a Ukrainian/Russian existentialist philosopher. Born in Kiev (Russian Empire) on February 13, 1866, he emigrated to France in 1921, fleeing from the aftermath of the October Revolution. He lived in Paris until his death on November 19, 1938.Shestov's philosophy is, at first sight, not a philosophy at all: it offers no systematic unity, no coherent set of propositions, no theoretical explanation of philosophical problems. Most of Shestov's work is fragmentary. With regard to the form (he often used aphorisms) the style may be deemed more web-like than linear, and more explosive than argumentative. The author seems to contradict himself on every page, and even seeks out paradoxes. This is because he believes that life itself is, in the last analysis, deeply paradoxical, and not comprehensible through logical or rational inquiry. Shestov maintains that no theory can solve the mysteries of life. Fundamentally, his philosophy is not 'problem-solving', but problem-generating, with a pronounced emphasis on life's enigmatic qualities. Franz Rosenzweig was a Jewish theologian and philosopher. Rosenzweig's major work is The Star of Redemption (first published in 1921). It is a description of the relationships between God, humanity, and the world, as they are connected by creation, revelation and redemption. If you make a diagram with God at the top, and the World and the Self below, the inter-relationships generate a Star of David map. He is critical of any attempt to replace actual human existence with an ideal. In Rosenzweig's scheme, revelation arises not in metaphysics but in the here and now. We are called to love God, and to do so is to return to the world, and that is redemption. Rosenzweig, while critical of Jewish scholar Martin Buber's early work, became close friends with him upon their meeting. Martin Buber was an Austrian-born Israeli Jewish philosopher best known for his philosophy of dialogue, a form of existentialism. Buber was a scholar, interpreter, and translator of Hasidic lore. He viewed Hasidism as a source of cultural renewal for Judaism, frequently citing examples from the Hasidic tradition that emphasized community, interpersonal life, and meaning in common activities (e.g., a worker's relation to his tools). The Hasidic ideal, according to Buber, emphasized a life lived in the unconditional presence of God, where there was no distinct separation between daily habits and religious experience. This was a major influence on Buber's philosophy of anthropology, which considered the basis of human existence as dialogical., Macmillan Publishing Company, 1970., 0, University of California Press. Tiny stain to rear board and obverse of DJ else book and DJ are fine/fine. ; 1 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 277 pages; How did the Romans build and maintain one of the most powerful and stable empires in the history of the world? This illuminating book draws on the literature, especially the historiography, composed by the members of the elite who conducted Roman foreign affairs. From this evidence, Susan P. Mattern reevaluates the roots, motivations, and goals of Roman imperial foreign policy especially as that policy related to warfare. In a major reinterpretation of the sources, Rome and the Enemy shows that concepts of national honor, fierce competition for status, and revenge drove Roman foreign policy, and though different from the highly rationalizing strategies often attributed to the Romans, dictated patterns of response that remained consistent over centuries. Mattern reconstructs the world view of the Roman decision-makers, the emperors, and the elite from which they drew their advisers. She discusses Roman conceptions of geography, strategy, economics, and the influence of traditional Roman values on the conduct of military campaigns. She shows that these leaders were more strongly influenced by a traditional, stereotyped perception of the enemy and a drive to avenge insults to their national honor than by concepts of defensible borders. In fact, the desire to enforce an image of Roman power was a major policy goal behind many of their most brutal and aggressive campaigns. Rome and the Enemy provides a fascinating look into the Roman mind in addition to a compelling re-examination of Roman conceptions of warfare and national honor. The resulting picture creates a new understanding of Rome's long mastery of the Mediterranean world. ., University of California Press, 1999, 3, UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn.VG+/VG+.No owner inscrptn but there does appear that a previous owner bookplate has been removed from the ffe; leaving some glue residue and a couple of tiny red ink,but no price-clip to dw/dj.There are no other marks or stamps to indicate it as an ex-library copy.Protected colour pictorial dw/dj with no wear or tear or creasing.Top+fore-edges slightly toned as usual/normal with contents bright, tight and clean with a dog-ear crease [tut-tut!!] to top of pp9/10.Blue paper-covered boards with stamped gilt letters to spine/backstrip with a black ink printed list of previous titles on front paste-down and blue ink pictorial decorated rear endpapers.UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn,3-244pp includes b/w line illus throughout the text,by John S. For many years,Dorothy Watson and Agnes Fogerty have taught in the school at Thrush Green, and when the time comes for their retirement there is general regret.Who will take Miss Watson's place as head teacher? As for replacing gentle little Miss Fogerty as kindly custodian of the infant's class,it seems impossible to imagine anyone doing the job as competently as she has done for so many years.Further speculation arises when it is found that the school house is to be sold.Winnie Bailey's brilliant but eccentric nephew Richard thinks it might prove suitable for his young family. Neighbours view this possibility with some misgivings. But as well as the retiring teachers' immediate problems, including a stray cat befriended by Agnes and discouraged by Dorothy,Thrush Green and Lulling have other topics of concern. Will the Misses Lovelock keep their latest domestic help? Is the young man outside The Fuschia Bush really an architectural student,as Agnes thinks? More important still, will the two teachers ever find a suitable retirement home at Barton-on-Sea? All these matters are discussed and finally resolved in these pages where old and new friends settle down together very happily.Miss Read's vivid descriptions of life in and around Thrush Green will again delight and enthral her many devoted readers who will welcome another visit to this charming Cotswold village. John Strickland Goodall(b.1908).Works as John S.Goodall or J. S. Goodall.Born Heacham,Norfolk, son of a heart specialist. Leaving Harrow School,he worked in the studios of Sir Arthur Cope RA and E.Watson Nicol under whom he 'was taught with loving care to be a mid-Victorian art student'.He also studied under Harold Speed and at the Royal Academy Schools (c1930.). Served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment (1939-46).Concentrated on line drawing in the 1930's,began painting in watercolours while stationed in India at the end of WW2.Since which, his extensive travels (e.g. twice around the world in a cargo boat) provided him with many landscape subjects;he also paints conversation pieces and late 19thC pastiches in watercolour and gouache. As an illustrator he works in b/w (sometimes in silhouette) and full-colour,turning his 'Victorian' early training to good account in evocative period tableaux. In his wordless picture books he has evolved an effective method of telling stories by means of half-pages placed between each double-page spread. Hendrickje,a girl from a strict Calvinist family, leaves her provincial home to find work as a housemaid. She enters Rembrandt's flourishing workshop five years after the death of the great artist's wife,an event that continues to haunt him.It is a house full of secrets and desires, and Hendrickje soon witnesses a sexual encounter between Rembrandt and Geertje, his implacable housekeeper. She is shocked to the core by their intense carnality and yet, slowly, she is drawn to Rembrandt by the freshness with which he perceives the world and the special freedom he seems to possess. Rembrandt is a man of dark corners, strange passions and a ruthlessness born from his need to put his art first.Involvement with him could mean Hendrickje's ruin or her liberty. 'Rembrandt's Mirror' explores the three women of Rembrandt's life, and the towering passions of the artist, seen through the eyes of his last great love,Hendrickje. Please contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.uk ,for correct, insured shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B. Ali Bacher has been described at the best-known cricket official in the world and, as such, has attracted as much admiration as opprobrium. He is considered to be the most influential personality in the history of South African cricket. It is a story that is told with pace and is not short on colour. It includes the views of people most relevant to the issues being covered, by way of example: those ANC officials who viewed Ali Bacher as an enemy, agreed to engage him in clandestine meetings and then embraced him as a comrade; insiders in and around SA cricket who have dealt with him on subjects ranging from the masterminding of Rebel cricket tours in the 1980s to dealing with the Match Fixing scandal of the 1990s; and what went into organising the biggest Cricket World Cup of all in South Africa in Feb-March 2003. It is a story that covers his more than four decades in the forefront of SA cricket, including the most remarkable years in the history of South Africa. It will draw on this historical detail but will strongly project as a story of modern-day cricket challenges. It is, very often, a story of one man's incredible and sometimes lonely commitment to shape the game he loves. 320 pages. Quantity Available: 1.
