It is set in Atlanta about 1900. The historical aspect seem well researched. She retains goodness and perseverance through continuous rejection by the "better" class, since she does not know her birth parents. She learns to read but is removed from the local school after parent suspect that she is illegitimate. She is home schooled by a teacher that was without a school. All is revealed by the end of the book and she saves her husband's family business. I seldom read a book more than 1 time but I have read this book 5 times, learning more details each time that I missed because I am a speed reader. It is a cheerful, clean book that also depicts the wealth and upper class of that time period, with all of their flaws. It is a wonderful narrative through the life of our main character, Jessica Kildare as she experiences life in the south. It's complex, filled with twists and turns, and written beautifully. It is not heavy on southern stereotypes, but does focus on society, class, and wealth in Atlanta, in the early 1900s. I highly recommend it., Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1953, Delhi, India: Nag Publishers, 1993. The Puranic Concept of Dana provides an exhaustive expostion of The Hindu practice of gift-giving. Here in The Author includes virtually every reference to dana found in the Vadas, Smritis, Dharmasutras and Puranas. These texts reveal a broad spectrum of religiously sanctioned gifting. Specific guidelines exist governing simple hospitality as well as such grandiose offerings as a king's weight in gold or a mountain of jewels. These practices were widespread and important for the material support of Hindu society on every level. Consequently, elaborate directions and rituals developed to insure the propriety of gifts, givers and recipients. These teachings constitute the substance of Dr. Acharya's research, and through these passages the reader may glimpse the larger patterns of Hindu culture. While the modern student may find the style of writing overly detailed and repetitive, one should remember their Context and sense the 'Voice' of rishis.Printed Pages: 296.. First Edition. Hardcover. Letters of a Portuguese Nun: Uncovering the Mystery Behind a 17th Century Forbidden Love-A HISTORICAL MYSTERY-(Hardcover IN DUST JACKET CONDITION VERY GOOD-PUBLISHED BY MIRAMAX BOOKS COPYRIGHT 2006-FIRST EDITION) by Myriam Cyr In 1669, a Parisian bookseller published a slim volume called Portuguese Letters, which unveiled a love affair between a young Portuguese nun and a French officer that had occurred a few years earlier during a chaotic and war-torn period in Portgual. The book contained passionate love letters the nun had written when the officer was forced to return to France. The letters took Paris by storm. They spoke of love in a manner so direct, so precise, and so raw, they sent shivers of recognition through the sophisticated stratums of polite society. As remarkable as the letters are, they were rivaled by the mystery that surrounds them: the author was unknown, and most people assumed they were the fictional product of a French aristocrat. The consensus was that no woman could write words of such stunning truth and beauty. Now, through meticulous research, Myriam Cyr persuasively makes the case that the nun, Mariana Alcoforado, did indeed write the letters, and her story is one of the most moving in the history of forbidden love. While this tale is infamous throughout Europe, it is fresh to American readers, and Myriam Cyr brings us the extraordinary letters; the fraught, dangerous, complex nature of this tumultuous period; and the fascinating lives of these real-life lovers in rich historical detail., Miramax Books, 2006, Bethany House Publishers, 1995. The first-person narrative, which comprises some 11,000 lines, tells of the heroine's childhood and youth in Italy and England, her self-education in her father's hidden library, and her successful pursuit of a literary career. Initially resisting a marriage proposal by the philanthropist Romney Leigh, Aurora later surrenders her independence and weds her faithful suitor, whose own idealism has also since been tempered by experience. Aurora's career, Romney's social theories, and a melodramatic subplot concerning forced prostitution elicit the author's vivid observations on the importance of poetry, the individual's responsibility to society, and the victimization of women., Cassandra Editions, 1979, New York: Signet, 2007. First Signet Printing. Paperback. Fine. Fans of quality historical suspense who mourn the end of the late Kate Ross's Julian Kestrel mysteries and the late Bruce Alexander's Sir John Fielding novels should find solace in the work of promising newcomer Harris, whose series (beginning with 2005's What Angels Fear) is set in Regency England. The ability of Harris's detective, Sebastian St. Cyr, the Viscount Devlin, to mingle freely with the cream of society leads to his receiving a highly sensitive commission. Given the perilous state of the English monarchy in 1811, the discovery of the dissolute Prince Regent with a murder victim in his arms makes the death of the beautiful young wife of an aristocrat even more scandalous. St. Cyr is charged by the powers that be with solving the crime and absolving the royal suspect. The author deftly combines political intrigue, cleverly concealed clues and vivid characters for a fast-moving story that will have readers eagerly anticipating future volumes in the series." -- Publishers Weekly Book is fine, a mild scrape on the back cover., Signet, 2007, New Society Publishers, 1990 A note on Book Clearing House notepad paper is signed "Nance."
