There are few intellectual movements in American political history more successful than the Federalist Society. Created in 1982 to counterbalance what its founders considered a liberal legal establishment, the organization has now become the conservative legal establishment, and membership is all but required for any conservative lawyer who hopes to enter politics or the judiciary. It can claim 40,000 members, including four Supreme Court Justices, dozens of federal judges, and every Republican attorneygeneral since its inception. But its power goes even deeper. In Ideas with Consequences, Amanda Hollis-Brusky, an expert on conservative legal movements, provides the first ever comprehensive documentation of how the Federalist Society exerts its influence. Drawing from a huge trove of documents, transcripts, and interviews, she presents a series of important legal questions and explains how the Federalist Society managed to revolutionize the jurisprudence for each one. Many of these questions--including the powers of the federal government, the individual right to bear arms, and the parameters of corporate political speech--had long been considered settled. But the Federalist Society was able to upend the existing conventional wisdom, promoting constitutional theories that had previously been dismissed as ludicrously radical. Hollis-Brusky argues that the Federalist Society offers several of the crucial ingredients needed to accomplish this constitutional revolution. It serves as a credentialing institution for conservative lawyers and judges, legitimizes novel interpretations of the constitution through a conservative framework, and provides a judicial audience of like-minded peers, which prevents the well-documented phenomenon of conservative judges turning moderate after years on the bench. Through these functions, it is able to exercise enormous influence on important cases at every level. With unparalleled research and analysis of some of the hottest poli ...|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/36b92fd4/ideas-with-consequences-amanda-hollis-brusky-9780199385522.jpg|9780199385522|Ideas with Consequences : Hardback : Oxford University Press Inc : 9780199385522 : 19 Feb 2015 : Amanda Hollis-Brusky shows how the Federalist Society serves as the hub of a complex circulatory system and how the ideas it generates have become the lif ...|new|1|1|18|26.49|0|GBP|Amanda Hollis-Brusky|Oxford University Press Inc|19 Feb 2015|Conservatism & right-of-centre democratic ideo ... 9780199315192|Weighing Reasons|55.00|https://wordery.com/weighing-reasons-errol-lord-9780199315192|In recent decades normative reasons-considerations that count in favor of one thing or another-have come to the theoretical fore in ethics and epistemology. A major attraction of normative reasons is that they have weight or strength. Reasons are particular considerations that count in favor of actions or attitudes to some degree. This feature is attractive to theorists who want to explain more complex normative phenomena in terms of a notion that is weighted. This volume aims to provide the beginnings for a theory of weight. The fourteen new essays fall into three groups. One set of essays addresses questions about the nature of weight. Topics include the relations between reasons and conditions and modifiers, between reasons and other weighted notions such as commitments, and different models of the interaction of reasons. A second set of essays addresses substantive questions: questions about weight relevant to value-first, desire-first, evidence-first and other normative research programs. A third set of essays applies issues in the theory of weight to broader ethical debates. The book thus not only makes novel contributions to debates in ethics and epistemology about the nature of normative reasons and their weight, it also makes a strong case for the theoretical fruitfulness of the ideology of normative reasons.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/5d1e96f3/weighing-reasons-errol-lord-9780199315192.jpg|9780199315192|Weighing Reasons : Hardback : Oxford University Press Inc : 9780199315192 : 17 Mar 2016 : Normative reasons have become a popular theoretical tool in recent decades. Yet there is much more to the debate than the clash of these extremes. As Thomas Dixon shows in this balanced introduction, many have seen harmony rather than conflict between faith and science. Exploring the key philosophical questions that underlie the debate, as well as the social, political, and ethical contexts, and offering perspectives from a range of religions and examples from across sciences, this Very Short Introduction reveals what is really at stake in the debate between science and religion.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/80c97a4d/science-and-religion-a-very-short-introduction-thomas-dixon-9780199295517.jpg|9780199295517|Science and Religion: A Very Short Introduction : Paperback : Oxford University Press : 9780199295517 : 24 Jul 2008 : From the trial of Galileo through to today's controversy over the teaching of 'Intelligent Design' in schools, there has been a long ...|new|1|1|74|8.99|0|GBP|Thomas Dixon|Oxford University Press|24 Jul 2008|History of ideas books 9780199298020|Sexuality: A Very Short Introduction|7.58|https://wordery.com/sexuality-a-very-short-introduction-veronique-mottier-9780199298020|Sex is everywhere in the modern world. This Very Short Introduction examines these questions and more, exploring how sexual norms have changed throughout history, from self-castrating early Christians to modern-day born-again virgins, from sexual liberationists to lesbian separatists; and tackling the major controversies around sex and sexuality today: ideas on masculinity and femininity, paedophilia, gay politics, sex education, eugenics, and even the future of sex itself.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/daefb2ec/sexuality-a-very-short-introduction-veronique-mottier-9780199298020.jpg|9780199298020|Sexuality: A Very Short Introduction : Paperback : Oxford University Press : 9780199298020 : 24 Apr 2008 : Is our sexuality a product of our genes, or of society, culture, and politics? Rejecting doctrines of innate principles and ideas, Locke shows how all our ideas, even the most abstract and complex, are grounded in human experience--attained by sensation of external things or reflection upon our mental activities. A thorough examination of the communication of ideas through language and the convention of taking words as signs of ideas paves the way for his penetrating critique of the limitations of ideas and the extent of our knowledge of ourselves, the world, God and morals. This abridgement, based on P.H. Nidditch's acclaimed critical edition, retains in full all key passages, thus enabling Locke's arguments to be more clearly followed. The new introduction by Pauline Phemister provides valuable background on Locke's essay, illuminating its arguments and conclusions. The book also includes a chronological table of significant events, select bibliography, succinct explanatory notes, and an index--all of which supply additional historical information and aids to navigating the text. In particular, social sciences and the humanities are now increasingly locked in a conceptual framework grounded in English. To most scholars in these fields, treating English as a default language seems a natural thing to do. The book's approach is interdisciplinary, and its themes range over areas of central interest to anthropology, psychology, and sociology, among others. The linguistic material is drawn from languages of America, Australia, the Pacific, South-East Asia and Europe. Wierzbicka argues that it is time for human sciences to take advantage of English as a global lingua franca while at the same time transcending the limitations of the historically-shaped conceptual vocabulary of English. And she shows how this can be done. Books, [PU: Oxford University Press]<
