Raised at Delphi in 479 BC as a votive to Apollo and as a monument to the victory of the united Greek poleis over the Persians, the Column supported a golden tripod, forged from Persian arms and armor. Eight centuries later when the Roman emperor Constantine refounded the city of Byzantium as his “victory city” (nikopolis), he filled it with existing victory monuments, including the Serpent Column. There it endured through the Byzantine millennium as a symbol of victory—Hellen ic, Roman, Christian—but also as an evocation of protection and redemption, temptation and judgment, all preoccupations of those who viewed it at the heart of an ever-changing city and empire. Unlike most of the city’s antique sculpture, the Serpent Column survived both the Fourth Crusade of 1204 and the capture of the city by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. The most enduring interpretation of the Column, which is unrelated to religion, and therefore survived the Ottoman capture, is as a talisman against snakes and snake-bites. It is this tale that was told by travelers to Constantinople throughout the Middle Ages, and it is this tale that is told to tourists who visit Istanbul today.
