This book is a magnificent sweeping overview of the whole of the Black Sea area. A history and guide, as well as a personal testament, it addresses many people on many levels. First published in 1991, in addition to making Greeks aware of the sheer breadth of Euxine Hellenism and bringing them again in contact with those people with whom they shared common experiences, it was shown to be an aid to the peoples of the Black Sea today in approaching those unknown areas concealed for so long behind political smokescreens, which had hidden not only the opposite shore from view but also, in many cases, the historical environment in which they were living. It helped, too, the international scholarly community, whose few academic publications in that area mainly focused on truncated antiquities and specialized subjects isolated from their context, to reconsider and make contact with this world to which all approaches had been cut off. Although the book deals with a long period of history that essentially ended in the early 20th century, this new enlarged edition of 2002 has been rewritten in the light of the momentous political developments from August 1991 onwards when the Soviet Union crumbled, and the Black Sea, with the states that surround it (Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, the Ukraine, the Russian Federation and Georgia) and its wider hinterland found itself at the eye of the storm. From this time, the 40 rivers that debouch the industrial effluent and urban waste of Europe and Asia into the Black Sea basin bring along with their polluted waters the swell of military clashes, the ripple of civil conflicts, the spume of age-old and recent nationalist sentiments, the murmur of new mentalities and conceptions, the rumble of the multiple collapses that drag down everything in their wake. The result of more than 25 years of involvement with the Black Sea world, in compiling her text Marianna Koromila has involved the help of many disciplines — historical geography, topography, archaeology, ethnology, and history — but beyond this the text moves in time and space, transgressing the usual temporal and special divisions into historical periods and specific areas of interest.
