However, as outlined by the authors in their preface, developments and solutions of the analytical theory of forced oceanic waves are of great value in validating the numerical results for the realistic ocean circulation models to come. In the past 20 or 30 years a number of papers concerned with the linear forcing of the ocean by windstress have been published. This volume is an attempt at a coherent account of the developments in this subject. The authors treat the linear forcing problem on the basis of a Green's function technique. Their general point of view is that analytical theory and numerical modelling are complementary components of theoretical oceanography. Analytical results establish more conclusively the intricate interaction between the underlying physical processes than a series of numerical simulations. However, analytical theory is limited to certain idealizations which yield tractable sets of equations and so the numerical methods provide a fascinating tool to proceed further. Analytical solutions of the idealized models are of great value in validating the numerical results. Moreover, many features of observations in the real oceans can qualitatively be understood in terms of linear theory. Even for processes affected by non-linearities, many of linear features persist into the non-linear range, especially at large scales. Furthermore, when dealing with perturbation methods it is the linear theory which yields the first order approach.
