Accompanied with essays by Squiers and Yamashiro., After more than 50 years in storage, a selection of images from the famed Kinsey Institute archive has been made available to the public in Peek. Alfred C. Kinsey, biology professor and pioneer in the field of sex research, began collecting erotic images in the late 1930s. This collection was kept hidden from the public eye until an uncooperative customs official outed a foreign shipment on its way to the Indianapolis institute in 1950; the requisite public controversy ensued. Was it pornography or science?

Looking at these images now, you can easily imagine the debate. Though many of the pictures are downright tame, and others are more like diagrams of the human body, some still qualify as hardcore, while the rest are awkward and almost comical. Contributor Carol Squire writes, "The difference between 'pornography' and 'erotica' may in fact simply be one of style." With that in mind, there's no telling what these images will do for you. Sexual stimuli aside, what's so riveting about them are their histories--from police-confiscated personal photos, to mass-produced turn-of-the-century images, to homemade collages of genitalia. It's pretty wild to trace the history of imagined sexuality dating back to early photography. The images vacillate between suggesting that what seemed sexy years ago is not so different from today, to revealing that what at one time may have been the height of risqué, such as a woman's long hair worn down, is now just sweetly old-fashioned. What does come clear is that, however the definition of sexy may vary, a fetish is forever. Also included are two essays full of information about the history of the institute, the collecting and choosing of the images, and the role of erotica in society. --J.P. Cohen
