They may have heard of Banff, Jasper Park Lodge, St. George's, and Highland Links because these are four of the greatest golf courses in the world. But it's doubtful that they know who designed them. It was Stanley Thompson. In 1928, legendary golf architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie - designer of Cypress Point, Augusta National, Royal Melbourne and Crystal Downs, among others - said that the golf course at Jasper Park Lodge was the best he'd ever seen. Robert Trent Jones, Sr. got his start with Thompson in 1930, and went on to become perhaps the greatest course designer ever. He said Thompson was one of the giants of his profession. Everyone who knew him said he was larger than life. He loved cigars, 15-ounce steaks, and whiskey. He is said to have made three separate fortunes and lost each one. He liked to wear fedoras and three-piece suits with a watch chain hooked into his vest pockets. Under his arm he would carry a briefcase, in his hand a cane. While building a course in Minnesota in 1951, a newspaper reporter described him as 'a fabulous little gentleman with a red face and spike-pointed cane seat'. He and his brothers were also some of the best golfers that Canada has ever known. Barclay's biography of Stanley Thompson is a tribute to one of golf's all-time great architects and great characters"---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.
