Catharine Macaulay's reply to Burke on the French Revolution has never been reprinted, but takes its place alongside Wollstonecraft's Vindication of the Rights of Men as the immediate response of the radical left, preceding Priestley, Mackintosh and Paine. Hers is the language of the trained historian with a liberal, not republican standpoint; and she believes that the abuses and defects of the British system (which Burke seeks to defend) can be reformed. But for France, with no constitutional basis on which to work, the Revolution has proved inevitable.
