William Kimber himself, worked for Hutchinson for about 17 years before founding "William Kimber & Co" in 1950.It specialized in aviation, war memoirs, autobiographies and motor-racing titles until 1973 when "Haunted Cornwall" took off and the Ghost Stories became another specialty. The company was bought by Thorsons in 1988,and therefore ceased publishing under that name. William Kimber was purchased by Thorsons in 1988 and therefore ceased publishing under that name. Thorsons was purchased by William Collins in 1989.William Collins became wholly owned by News Corporation in 1990, and was then incorporated into HarperCollins Publishers. The name of William Kimber has not been used for publishing since that ,making all previously published titles by them, out-of-print, under that name. 'Tanks Across the Desert' tells the story of war through the eyes of a tank sergeant. It gives an extremely true to life picture of fierce tank soldiering in the Second World War,vividly recreating the atmosphere of conflict and destruction encountered by one tank,of one squadron of one regiment in North Africa and later in Italy. Sergeant Jake Wardrop joined the 5th Battalion,Royal Tank Corps in 1937 and fought in France in the summer of 1940, then in the Western Desert,Tripolitania,Tunisia and on to Italy until December 1943.The 5th then returned to the UK to prepare for D-Day and Jake was killed in action a few days before the end of the war. Wardrop kept a detailed and graphic record of each battle in which he was to take part from 1941 to 1943,compiling a personal diary which had long remained in the possession of his mother to whom he sent back extracts from time to time while on active service. This diary now not only gives an insight into Wardrop's many adventures with the 5th Royal Tank Regiment, but also serves as an exciting battlefield record of the fine regiment to which he was proud to belong. Hubert Scott-Paine was a remarkable man.At the age of 23 he founded Supermarine Aviation in Southampton in 1914,and made his fortune designing and building flying boats in the First World War.After the war,he pioneered the use of flying boats in civil aviation and established the first international flying boat services. Scott-Paine sold Supermarine Aviation and turned his attention to the pursuit of speed at sea.A sportsman of international repute,he had sponsored the 1922 British win of the Schneider Trophy at his own expense, and pioneered the design of fast motor boats including the world famous 'Miss England I' and 'Miss Britain III', the first single-engined boat to travel at 100mph.In 1927 he founded the British Power Boat Company at Hythe,Southampton, where he developed the most efficient boat building factory in the world, achieving world fame as the designer and builder of revolutionary types of fast boat. Scott-Paine was an innovator and saw the potential for his boats in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.In 1930 he was joined by the legendary T.E. Shaw (Lawrence of Arabia) who played a key role in persuading the Royal Navy to accept his concept of a fast,light-weight motor torpedo boat. 'Fast Boats and Flying Boats' traces the history of Scott-Paine's endeavours to persuade the reluctant "bowler-hatted brigade" of the Admiralty to accept new types of boats and engines,a battle that laid the foundations for what was to emerge as the Air Sea Rescue Service and the Coastal Forces of World War II.When war broke out again he was sent on a secret mission to secure the production of engines for British boats and to establish the production of the American PT Boat, based on Scott-Paine designs. Using recently discovered documents the book traces the remarkable story of Scott-Paine's Canadian Power Boat Company and the wartime production of Motor Gun Boats and Air Sea Rescue boats by the British Power Boat Company at Hythe. This is the first, major study of this true pioneer and will be required reading for students and enthusiasts of both early flying boats and fast marine craft. It is illustrated with over 80 contemporary b/w photographs, the essence of a unique collection which has taken eight years to compile, many of these are from the Scott-Paine archives.
