Besitzvermerk Michael Richter und dessen Notizen. - The territory of the Cenel Conaill is best indicated by the extent of the Diocese of Raphoe, established in the twelfth century, conforming to the political configuration of that time. The Diocese of Deny, which corresponds to the area controlled or claimed by the MacLochlainn dynasty of the Cenel Eogain in the late twelfth century, includes Inishowen and Cenel Moen, both now in County Donegal. Less than one third of Donegal are suitable for agriculture today nearly 2 thirds consist of rough pasture and upland bog. It is likely that already by this time Neolithic agriculturists were living in Donegal and were building the great megalithic tombs of the County which in number and quality are amongst the best in Ireland. The rich agricultural land in the East of Donegal has been cultivated for millennia, resulting in a high degree of monument destruction. The wealth of field monuments is paralleled by the numerous Bronze Age artifacts which have been found in Donegal. Amongst the most spectacular of these are the gold lunulae from Naran and Gartan, the gold tores from Largatreany and a collection of more than fourteen gold ribbon tores from the Inishowen peninsula. The great cashel at the Grianán of Aileach was the symbolic centre of the power of the Ui Neill in the North of Ireland down to the twelfth century. There were, however, many important early ecclesiastical sites in Donegal and amongst the most interesting survivals form this period are the excellent series of crosses and cross-slabs some of which have been suggested to date as early as the seventh century. Fine metalwork was created in Donegal during the early Historic period. Excavations at Dooey just North of Gweebarra Bay, revealed not only a habitation area but a complex industrial site including evidence for iron and bronze working, bone and antler carving, and the probable production of valuable purple or crimson dye from the shells of Dog-Whelk.
