In fact, the country's first "Old West" was the land just beyond the crest of the Appalachian Mountains. This "backcountry" of the colonies was a vast, unexplored, unknown, mysterious wilderness occupied by supposedly hostile Indians. America's First Western Frontier: East Tennessee is a history of that primitive wilderness; an account of Indians, fur traders, explorers, soldiers, pioneers and politicians. It is a narrative of the first "old West", across the Appalachian Mountains, and the many "firsts" that occurred there. The history of the Cherokee Nation is so closely interwoven with the story of the white settlers of Tennessee and the white man's expansion westward, that to separate the two belies the historical reality of America's first western frontier. The author's stated purpose in writing this book is to give a definitive history of both races, bringing into the volume any necessary prehistorical information on the Cherokees with which the reader might be unfamiliar. The recital of events is concentrated primarily within the period covering 1600 to 1839 ~ an epoch which vividly presents the westward sweep of the pioneers along buffalo and Indian trails, as they moved across the eastern mountain barrier into the heart of the Cherokee country. It is the story of how an ambitious and venturesome people acquired, settled, and then defended the land; and how a courageous and intelligent race, already established there, fought that settlement and struggled for their own survival, finally being driven from their ancient homeland. By the time of the coming of the Unakas, or white men, the prehistoric Cherokee people had developed an advanced culture probably exceeded only by the Mayan and Aztec groups of the Southwest. This mysterious tribe~whose origin is lost and whose name is inexplicable~were the aborigines of present Tennessee, or at least the tribe in possession of this land when the first Europeans came. The Great Valley of East Tennessee was the southern section of the Old West and where the first permanent settlements were made. Its rich soil, swift streams, mild climate, and boundless forests were irresistible attractions to the early colonists on the Atlantic seaboard. The beauty of the Appalachian West beckoned to their souls just as the seductive singing of the Grecian sirens lured the ancient mariners, and they would find her just as irresistible. The stage was set, the script prepared, the players selected, and the play began to unfold. The plot would be a dramatic contest between two races who differed so radically that any accommodation was inconceivable. It was to be a conflict from which even surrender could bring no release, and would climax when both victor and vanquished would realize too late What both were losing.
