Since the 1860s the phenomenon of the railway has dominated the attention of the public in New Zealand. The authors, Geoffrey Churchman and Tony Hurst, tell the story of the development of the railways of New Zealand from when a small crowd at Christchurch farewelled a broad gauge steam locomotive with 4-wheel passenger cars to Ferrymead, 7 km away, in 1863, to today’s hi-tech freight operations on 3900 km of track.
